ADELAIDE went alone to the Culver home on the news l of her father's death. Her brother, Treff, met her at the train but she could tell by his reserved look that he had not forgiven her. TreS explained about the death, "He'd been digging in the garden ... it was his heart." Adelaide truly did not feel the loss very deeply. She had( not seen her father in seven yeafs and had never really known him. She comforted her mother as much as their strained relations permitted. It was when she was helping Alice tie the cards on the flowers that she broke down. She said, "Alice, do you remember once, in Kensington, sorting out toys and tying cards on them?" . ,.
