Senator Taft And The Headlines Touring the west on a mission vital to himself and pethaps to the Republican party, Senator Robert A. Taft is accompanied by almost as many newspaper correspondents as ride with a presidential nominee; This indicated the importance attached to his statements from a national as well as a partisan viewpoint. The course of the next session of Congress might be charted to some extent by Jiis western speech

es. Some clues might be found toward the governmental attitude during the next four years in the event he was nominated and elected president. What Senator Taft has to say possibly rates such consideration, but he has had a difficult time making conspicuous headlines. He has had to battle with pessimistic reports from abroad and with a wide variety of happenings at home. Last week the hurricane helped crowd him off page one in most newspapers. The U. N. general assembly meeting and ocretary of State Marshall's address are among the events overshadowing Senator Taft and his speeches. But the Ohioan finds it much easier to be philosophical about such competition than to forget and forgive the way in which Senator Saltonstall of Massachusetts, one of his influential Republican colleagues, called attention to another kind of competition. Saltonstall declared that he is not , ninning for the presidential nomination and added that he regards Governor Dewey as the leading contender. As far as Massachusetts is concerned, Saltonstall rates Dewey first and Taft third, with Governor Warren of California in between. ' ' It perhaps will be no surprise to Senator Taft that the ' New Yorker has the. edge in the contest for Massachusetts' 35 delegates to the Republican national convention, but he nuiy be pardoned for feeling that Saltonstall needn't have ' been so frank about it. Most. GOP' senators the regulars, 1 that is aren't supposed to possess any deep affection for i loin Dewey. They envy the fact that as governor he needn't stick out his neck now on national and international issues.' At the same time they criticize him for taking advantage of his position. . - . . ' I

Moreover, the more conservative senators, like the Old Guard in general, view Dewey as an upstart or a bit too independent. They point to the fact that. New -York, during his administration, has enacted some New Dealish legislation. But New England is getting to be , a bit progressive too. Nothing radical, .of. course, but'Tobey, Aiken, Saltonstall, Lodge and Baldwin, with sometimes the help of Flanders, form a little bloc to the left of Taft. That puts them, you might figure, closer to Dewey. . - Senator Taft if nothing is not nonchalant. lis knows cert Din observers have picked him as the. choree' of party leaders for the ID 18 candidate. In fact he comes the closest of all active (if not avowed) candidates to meeting Old Guard i specifications. And since these strategists have a great de?l 1 to do with selecting the delegates, Taft doesn't have to concede anything to his chief rival at present. That applies even to Massachusetts, as Senator Saltonstall acknowledges.

But that still doesn't help much in Taft's . battle . for

headlines.

Dr. Joe and Dr." Betty Dukes and family and Miss Marcella Dukes of Indianapolis, were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Dukes. The Good Cheer club met Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Ella Sims. Games and contests were played with prizas going to Bonnie Duncan, high; Anna Stevenson, low and travel.' Refreshments bf jello salad, chicken sandwiches and cokes were served to the iiollowing members: Anna Stevenson, Lucille Stevenson, Bonnie Duncan, Isabelle Wilson, and the hostess, Ella Sims. The next meeting will

be with Mrs. Berniece Turpen.
