Guidance From Proverbs

Lesson for September 21, 1947

IP1

OUR study of Sunday's ' lesson centers about the idea of good-, ness, which is a rather trite-sound-, ing theme, but very vital, I assure: you, and quite ia-

teresting. The; Scripture passages are all found in; Proverbs, save one,1 and that from the, very practical, preacher of the New Testament,!

J James, chapter 4,;

verse 17. " Perhaps you willj find the passages from Proverbs as

Dr. Newton helpful and inter-, esting as I did. It; will require but two minutes to read them Proverbs 3:5-7; 4:23; 6:1619; 9:10; 14:34; 15:1; 16:18; 21:3; I 22:1; 27:1, 2; 28:1; 29:18. And after you have devoted two minutes to thtj reading of these passages, you will have something to think about for the rest of the day, the week, all; your life.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Matter" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, September 21. The Golden Text is: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols" (I John 5:21). Among the citations which comprise trie Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh" (Luke 21:10, 11,28). . The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "The breaking up of material belief s may, seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases

until their nothingness appears.

These disturbances will continue un- lervite.

One Man's Experience

A VERY successful business man

in Atlanta, a shoe manufacture

er, was telling me his life story onel

day as we fished together at Ho-l

mosassa, Fla, Finally, he said: "Do you know the passage in the

Bible that has meant most to me as, a rule and guide for my faith andi

practice?" . . i 1 wondered what he would say.'

And then he quoted from Proverbs 3:5-7. !

i "Trust in tlie Lord with all thine ' heart; and lean not' unto thine own j understanding. In all thy ways ' acknowledge him, and he shall ; direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the Lord, and , depart from evil." . The Essence of Goodness 1. WHAT is goodness? We talK about good men and bad meru good times and bad times, good luck snd bad luck. Just what is cood-

ness? '!

Jesus himself once said to a young man:

"There is none good but One, that

is, God." Mark 10:18.

Goodness then, permit me to suggest, is what happens when God: lives in us. We can never know goodness apart from God, try as we

may. The essence of goodness, therefore, is found in that heart, in that life, that sincerely prays, "Thy; will be done." The Essence of Badness

There are parts of NortH America through which" men can travel a thousand miles by. canoel But not all of the journey is easy paddling on glassy lakes, or lazy drifting before friendly currents. There are choppy rivers and swirling rapids. And 'when the river becomes un-navigable, or the lake ends . . . there is always a "carry." . A "carry" isn't easy. 'You have to shoulder, your duffle-packed craft and. make your way slowly overland to the next stretch of water. You have no choice in the matter . . . you must make the "carry", or you can't go on. . Life isn't much different than a journey by canoe. There are "carries" that must be made if we are to go on. A man can't escape the burdened miles that are part of his journey. .The strength. we need for such times is riot physical, but spiritual. - It doesn't come frgm vitamins it comes from FAITH. The Church has helped millions to make the "carries" of life. The Church can help YOU. y ' .
