Old trees reveal scars of fires . thdt occurred centuries ago. There are toar records of con-' flagratior. u the big-tree forests of California a far back as A. D. 245. and again In 1441. before white men had set foot in the west Spruce trees still bear the marks of fires that swept over forested mountain slopes of Colorado ln 1676, 1707 and 1722. White spruce forests in Maine likewise tell of a fire that burned some 200 square miles in 1795. Kapok is the fiber obtained from the seed pod of the kapok tree. After being- subjected to a certain blowing process, it is used as filling' for pillows and mattresses. .

He said, "My name is Gilbert Lauderdale."
ADELAIDE was struck by the voice of the man who lay on the cobblestones and recited poetry. It. was the voice of a ggntleman-drunk after life with Henry Lambert she recognized it. She said, "If you're not hurt, please get up." He did more than that. He rose, brushed himself off and climbed the stairway. Bowing elaborately, he said, . "My name is Gilbert Lauderdale." . '?'" It was obvious that he recognized her as a lady. Adelaide was touched. And she was lonesome. His extreme polite-' ness encouraged her, and their talk became quite personal. He told her that he was a one-time lawyer turned part-, time actor; she mentioned that she had been a widow for 4 tvo years. It was quite possible that her aunt in Kensihg' ton had known his aunt ... Mr. Lauderdale was aBout to take Adelaide's hand whea
"She may be coming hers," Adelaide said. . '. ' she sajd, "Hush!" She looked across the Mews, just as Mrs. Mounsey came but on the balcony. Mrs. Mounsey .stared at them, and they stared back. Mr. Lauderdale whispered, "What a horrible creature." . "Hush," Adelaide said. "She may be coming here." "Here? Why should she?" " : Adelaide did not answer the question directly. When she had made a cup of tea,- she told him the whole story of Henry Lambert's death and Mrs.-Mounsey 'S blackmail. . "You must" never pay her another farthing," he said. "She won't dare go to the police. Turn her out." ; "'She's evil,'? Adelaide, shuddered. "I'm afraid."' . "I'll do it for ypu," Mr: Lauderdale offered. It was not long afterward that Mrs. Mounsey knocked asd' entered. She skat a suspicious glance at Laudsrdale,
Mrs. Mounsey turned to Adelaide. "Who's 'e?" pointed and then turned to Adelaide. "Who's 'e?" "He's a witness'," said Adelaide, "to the fact that I am no longer going to pay you ten shillings a week." "I am also," cut in Mr. Lauderdale, "a lawyer. I've just been telling Mrs. Lambert that she can prosecute you." Mrs. Mounsey sneered. Then she threatened. At last she loosed a torrent of abuse, Adelaide instinctively put her hands to her ears but the horrible voice rose louder, the language grew more and more obscene. For perhaps a minute the evil flood rose inexhaustibly; then Mr. Lauder-; dale advanced and with his open hand, but with great force; struck Mrs. Mounsey across the mouth. , '' "If you ever bother Mrs. Lambert again," he said, i'TU break every bone in your body. Now get out." ' (Continued tomorrow ;
