Education Of Senator Taft

In 'Chicago at the start of his ' Western tour, Senator 'aft discovered a slight mistake in the Taft-Hartley Act. , e did' Jiot; intend, he said, that the bill should deny access o the Rational Labor Relations Board to all local unions if ny national' nnion official failed to sign a non-Communist ' f fidavit.':That: is how the law is being interpreted, however, ' ,nd the result is to exclude most unions from NLRB - p'roectioh. . ' ' ' ' ' '' -. ' . v.. ... -. . In California, Senator Taft had a talk . with , Harry iUndebei'g, head of the A. F. of L. sailors' union, and learned hat an outright, ban on the' closed shop might not be such a ;ood idea, after all: That is what the law provides, however, nd the senator delivered many a spirited argument for the an Respite the well-known fact that in some industries the losed. shop effectively serves the interests of labor, em'loyers and stable labor relations.1 ' : ' . The senator has previously announced, that he would be illing to sponsor amendments to the Taft-Hartley ' Act if onvinced of their desirability. He now "has at' least two .mendments to think about. The formation of an organization in Sullivan County, to be

known as the Sullivan County Taxpayers Association has been announced. The need for such an organization has been known for some time. It was not -until the people became aware that the proposed bond issue for a hospital was being forced upon them that the organization became a reality. Therefore, it must be stated that the association must have for its immediate objective the presentation of information and evidence that will aid Sullivan County citizens in arriving at sane and . reasonable conclusions with : reference to said issue. " However, it is the long view purpose of this organization to guarantee the proper use of the tax dollar. It is important that such economic conditions in Sullivan County be maintained that our miners, farm and industrial workers and veterans be encouraged to become home owners; that industries may be induced to ' locate here; that present property holders be protected from the disastrous conditions of a few years back. To this end there should be one hundred per cent cooperation of all taxpayers that our efforts may be wholly successful. It is a matter of record that some twenty years ago the county bonded itself to the construction of a court house. How many citizens did foresee the tragic years' that followed when there

thousands of dollars and general economic stagnation everywhere. This example provides very good reason why there should ' be someone to hang up warning signals along the way. So this organization appeals to the citizens of the county for cooperation, that in this particular instance undue haste in signing petitions be avoided, that every one be given an opportunely to hear both sides of the question, that honest conclusions may be reached. ' ' -

This organization has as' its officers the following: Vice-Chairman, Vaughn, Jones Chairman, Gau It Pleasant Secretary, Howard Edwards Treasurer, Ri P. Akers : Policy Committee: Zelva C. Drake, Wm: F. Johnson, W. W. Watson, Walter Nash, and Arlie Lester. .' .
