The Golden Arrows ran into too much beef Friday night when they tackled those big Bloomington Panthers. When we saw the visitors last week in their opener with New Castle, they didn't look too husky, but that was probably because the Trojans were big, ioo. For most of the first half, the Arrows stopped the Panther power drives enough to keep their goal line unclosed until just a minute and a half of the first half was left to be played, . then Austin Stephens pulled his way
througher the middle of the Arrow line for the score. But, in the last half, it was just a battle to keep the score down, and the Arrows did a good job of doing that. Both Ben Wernz and Red Anderson ' showed considerable improvement in their, play at end, enough to indicate that the ArV rows will have a couple of adequate ends before the season is over," The line, which was the strong point against Bicknell, showed to advantage until the reserve strength of the Panthers started ripping through for gains on almost every play. - But even at that, the Arrows have two things to be proud of. The play of Laskey at left guard was very good. Twice he sliced through the Panther line to stop Jim Deal, the Panther's Negro speed merchant, behind the line for losses. The other thing was the offensive threat the Arrows demonstrated in the third quarter when Brodie was playing quarterback. In fact, that was the only offense the, Arrows got under way the whole game. That series saw the Arrows move from their own twenty to the Panther 36 before Sullivan lost the ball on downs. Other than that, the Arrows didn't show a thing in the way of an offense. Up north, South Bend Riley
lost to Mishawaka by 14 to 0. It must have been a surprise to Spike Kelly because the Cavemen were one of the few teams his Wildcats were figured to beat. The Cavemen aren't regarded as having too much this year. That series with Ohio schools turned out rather badly for a couple of the North's power teams. Elkhart lost to Toledo Waite by 20 to 0, and Fort Wayne North , Side dropped one to Mansfield, Ohio, by 37 to 13. What the other teams did Whiting against Lima South, and
Fort Wayne South Side against Toledo Scott hasn't come in yet, Some of the teams that will play the Arrows later in the season did all right, others were stopped. The Washington Hatchets, who will be at home to the Arrows Friday night, tied Princeton, 0 to 0. Incidently, Washington has never beaten the Tigers. Vincennes showed plenty of power to beat Wiley, 21 to 6, while Linton topped Tech, 16 to 6. Clinton won easily, and Brazil, who is frankly laying for the Arrows, were trounced by Central from Evansville, 18 to 0.
