Like Senator Pepper d others, he believes any such attempt to form a new ornization would have the effect simply of destroying the wiocrats' chances in 1948. ; .;' .'Their opiniens are aimed particularly at Henry A. . Wal:e," whose name has been invoked in the California movent, whether or not he gave it his blessing. ; But Mr. Arnall has gone farther than most Democratic pgressives in offering a program to keep as much liberaln as . possible in the party. In addition to contending that e 1948 convention must nominate, as . President Truman's nning mate, ."some one, who will appeal to. the liberal elent," the Georgian offers 10 platform recommendations to along with such a candidate, as follows: ....... ; . . ...1. The Democratic party, if successful, should guarantee ery boy and girl, regardless of race, creed or residence; an ucation limited only by ability to learn. ; . 2. Every citizen,- irrespective of residence, ' should be aranteed adequate hospitalization and medical care. ("I do it mean socialized medicine; whatever that is," said Arnall. mean more hospitals, more doctors, and greater ability t6 y for private treatment.") ; . 1 -3. Every American should have a home, -'The govern?nt should guarantee it not by gift, but by making it pds)le to attain." . .... 4. Every American should be assured a job if he wants ."Private, enterprise, should do this, but if it cannot .then e government should sten in." . ..

' 5. The government should materially decrease the, cost ' livingi. ."It should.do :so by stepping up production, and if

iat tails, then by aching back prices."

6. There should be reduction' in individual income taxes.

ne reason we cannot raise production is because there is

incentive. . ; .' . - 7. "We should wage war relentlessly UDon monooolv.

he doctrine of scarcity is not the solution. The little man

iust have a chance.

8. We must secure equal rights for all our people by

reaming me into the Constitution."

9. There' should be more emphasis on individual freedom ad individual dignity; providing. opportunity for man to as-

;rt himself. "That's where we draw the line at communism, 'hich submerges the individual." . .

5 lOVVe should not wait .for world government. America ho'uld work everywhere for.the right of peoples- to assert lieir own determination, and to live in the family of nations, finally, we should assume just as tough a policy as necessary

o onng aoout co-operation ot Kuss;a with other nations,"

. ;, Un tirst reading, this program bears a striking resembmce to the average political platform, calculated ' to catch

.11 types of voters. With Mr. Arnall's Qualifications, it of-

'ers little to shock conservatives and for that rensnn mav hp

acking in appeal to liberals. Why then did he offer it at this

;ime? Perhaps. as, a basis for, discussion. Perhaps to empha

size nis oenei that the selection ot a liberal vice presidential candidate is h,eeded, to give credibility to any such pledges. Perhaps to invite attention to his, own availability, although lie insists he was "not looking in a mirror" when he stressed that point. ..;....;-,' " At any rate,, Mr. Arnall has invited discussion, and the response should be extensive, for political stakes will be highin 1948.

Once Gver Lightly

Governor Gates' decision to hold a special Tenth District election on Nov. 4, the date for the municipal elections has brought some interesting howls from Republican leaders in that district. You may recall that Raymond Springer, who was the Congressional leader for that district, died recently, and so a new election is necessary to fill his vacant seat.

When the Governor set that date, the leaders over in the eastern part of the state yelled

to high heaven. They didn't want work at it,

the election held in conjunction with the city elections, because they were afraid that .such an election would bring out the labor vote and that the labor groups were so riled over the Taft-Hartley law that it would be just plain murder. Could it be

little hard-nosed after the ex- J perience that followed the other war, when We were called Uncle Shy lock" because we quaintly in-

sisted that Europe pay its debts to this country. Just in case you happen to be married, and should feel like kissing your wife on a street corner, stay away from Warrior, Alabama. Down that way, a

(visitor happened to kiss his wife in front of a drug store, and. the mayor of the town fined him $27.50. Well, tell me, if you can t kiss your wife on the street, just who can you kiss there? There must bo a manpower or maybe we should say womanpower shortage in Japan. Princess Sadako, the empress , dowager, has been named president of the Japan Silk Thread Association.
