', Dear Editor, " Irt my reply to the Miss Whipstitches of Sullivan (Times-Aug 19),. re 'the Committee on UnAmerican Activities, I offered a POSSIBLE solution to, the undemocratic tyranny of this com.inittee. The three suggestions offered at that time are some which are put forth by certain fearful , liberals. Eut I offered them more in a playful attempt to; stem the holy indignation of the Miss Whipstitches; personally I cannot see how they could work. The following is, to me, the only course where the UnAmerican Activities ' Committee is concerned. Enact it out of existance. Is this drastic? Of course it is. But so is the cutting-out of a cancer. ' The Miss Whipstitches will ; cry: "Oh no we need some kind of committee with all this, subversion going on." Dp we? Perhaps. But is it possible to combat one kind of lui-Americanism with another brand? ;. Have the Miss Whipstitches considered the obstacles in the way of such a committee's operating democratically? The very nature of the committee its very purpose is a repudiation of democratic principles. Its existence implies that one person is saying something that another person doesn't like, and that tha second person is going to shut up the first person. Is this democratic? Must the principle of free speech go out of the window simply because I oppose what this man is saying? When the .Constitution-makers laid .down the rule of ' free speech, they didn't mean just that speech that
we like to hear they meant ALL speech. Some time ago, in another letter to the Times, I quoted from John Etuart Mill's "On Liberty." The passage is worth re-quoting: "If all mankind minus . one, were of one opinion, and only one person were o the contrary' opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing tha one' person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind... If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunty of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose . . the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with rror ... To iefuee a hearing to an opinion, because they are sure it is false, is to assume that THEIR certainty is the same thing as ABSOLUTE certainty. All silencing of discussion is an assumption of infallibality.". In short: Are you so "right" that you must silence all or any of your opposition? Sincerely, Puttyputt"
