Philip tojled up the hill to the house ...
IT was on a lovely autumn day that Philip received the letter from Mary. "We shall be home soon," she wrote. "Mama is looking the best she has since Papa's death . . Philip slowly laid aside the letter. He could never marry that lovely girl Jerome had made him see that. But how could he endure to be near her? i He thought, I will look at Hilltop just once more before they return and never see it again, fie toiled up the road to the house. He stood in the garden for the last time and picked a rosebud. He would always remember this garden; To him it was a holy place. . , He felt the lightest touch on his arm, and turned quickly, to see Mary, smiling. "Mary, my dear," he murmured. "We came home last night. How did you know?" I did not know, he thought. ' Or did I know instinctively? .
'He turned. "Mary, my dear," he murmured.'
He looked grave and she knew he was in trouble. She took his hand, "Philip,"' she said, "when we found Papa that night in the; ditch, he wasn't dead. We brought him home and before he died he whispered: "Send for Philip. I want to see Philip. I want to see you two together, you and Philip.'" ' . Her eyes widened. "You didn't know, did you!" "Mary!" He said. She put her lips simply and gently on his. "Come in, dear. Mama wants to see you." ... At dusk, that day, Philip returned to his home and told Alfred, "Amalie insists upon leaving HiHtop for Mary and me. Her. share would be a wedding present." Alfred exclaimed, "Amalie must not do that! I couldn't bear to think of Hilltop and Amalie not there." He looked out and caught a glimmer of light far up the hill. He said
Alfred told Amalie, "Hilltop is your home.'
abruptly, "I must go out for a while. Wait for me." ... It was like coming home for Alfred. The house was the same. Amalie held out her hand. "Alfred," she said. "Amalie." He told ' her how happy he was over- the coming marriage of Philip and Mary, then added, "I hope i to persuade you not to leave Hilltop." j "I have no right here." I "It is your home. You don't know how it has comforted ne, all these years, to think of you here." I Full of wonder, she looked at him. She took his warm, ! firm hand and tears spilled over her face. He said, "Amalie, will you let me come again some day soon?" ; "Yes," she said, "soon." I Yes, I will come, thought Alfred, with deep surety. And ! some day I shan't go away again. The End. i
