Direct Relief In County Increases . INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 7 The expenditures for direct relief, administered Dy township trustees, increased in Sullivan County from $18,999 in 1945 to $26,196 in 1946. Direct relief expenditures increased in eighty-two counties while decreases are shown in tan counties. The figures were made public today in a statement issued by the Indiana Taxpayers
Association. Direct relief amounted to $1,982,477 in 1945 and totaled $2,972,965 last year, the statement shows. The net increase is $890,488 or virtually 45 per cent. "These expenditures," said Harry Miesse, chairman of the board of directors of the Indiana Taxpayers Association, "should not be confused with old-age assistance or aid to dependent children, grants which is created by persons who apply directly to
their township trustees for relief and who receive allowances 'for food, shelter and other purposes.
"Our investigations show that during the first five months of 1946 an 'average of 29,588 persons, were the recipients of direct relief. During the first five months of 1947 this average had dropped to $27,786, but the cost of administering to their needs had advanced an average of 6 per cent, throughout the state. If this

I trend is continued we can expect a much higher total for direct relief than was shown for 1946.
"It is not our purpose to challange the right of destitute persons to obtain assistance from the township trustees; That has been authorized by law in Indiana for many years, but we should not forget that employment is now at an exceptionally high level and that persons who want to work should not find it difficult to obtain jobs. Thus the township trustees, to whom these persons apply for help,, are facing even heavier responsibilieies as ehey determine who should receive grants and who should be denied. "The trustees will budget what they think they wilr need for direct relief purposes next year.

I We are confident that the advisory boards will examine vhese ! estimates carefully, remembering ithat property taxes are now abnormally high and the forecast is for even higher rates in 1948. Thus the question of direct relief is also one that affects the taxpayers. If they know of instances
where such grants are being made to the undeserving, they shoulld protest ' to the trustees and the advisoryvboards. This type of assistance should never be more liberal than the circumstances warrant." i In surrounding counties there was an increase in the amount of relief spent in every county except Owen County, where there was a decline of 1.9 per cent. Clay County showed an increase of 24.5 per cent; Daviess County increased 20.2 per cent; Greene County was up 52.7 per cent; Knox County's relief jumped 53.1 per cent; Vermillion County had an increase of 29.7 per cent, and Vieo County increased 34.0 per cent.

The reverse proved true, as the typewriter made, ideas easy to put down on paper, resulting in more booklets, magazines and pamphlets, which in turn made more work for the printers. In 1739 Gen.
