Only the coachman was there to meet them. JEROME felt his first presentiment of danger when he arrived at the railroad station with Mr. Lindsey and Philip. He had wired Alfred of their coming but only the coachman was at the station to meet them. Jerome helped the others in and asked the coachman for. news of the family. The man spoke cautiously. (He had been warned by Alfred.) Miss Dorothea had one of her bad colds again, and was in bed. Mr. Alfred had been called away but would return that night. He hesitated Miss Amalie was "not too well." Apprehension grew stronger in Jerome when they entered the house though there was no sound and no one was in sight. "It is good to be home," said Mr. Lindsey. He allowed Jerome to help him up the stairs and into bed. Jerome piled the pillows under his father's head, then

listened. Was that the front door closing? No one came up. There was a knock and Jim entered with a tray. He poured Mr. Lindsey's tea and Jerome followed the valet out. In the hall, Jim whispered, "There's bad trouble here. But it doesn't do to dwell on it. I'll tell you in your room." When they closed the door, Jerome said, "Out with it. What the hell is the matter here? Where is Miss Amalie?" Jim put his hand on Jerome's arm. "I don't know it all, sir. They try to keep it from me. But two days ago, Mr. Alfred took away Miss Amalie, in the buggy." Jerome caught his arm fiercely. "Where is she?" Jim shook his head. "That I don't know, sir." Jerome dashed out. There was a light under the library door. He flung it open and there was Alfred, standing before the fireplace with bent head. He had been out, for his

tall hat, his gloves and cane were on a table nearby. When he looked at Jerome, Alfred's eyes flashed hatred. "Where is Amalie?" asked Jerome, and lie advanced toward his cousin. Then he stopped and the two men looked at each other in a silence that grew more frightful with every second. A voice said in Jerome's mind, he will kill you, if possible. Jerome's first emotion was incredulity. He only thought of Alfred as a tiresome obstacle . . . And so they looked at each other and Jerome thought, he is mad. Every nerve thrilled with the knowledge that pos- . sible Death stood only a few feet from him. Suddenly, his eye leapt aside, looking for a weapon with which to defend himself. Alfred saw the swift side glance and it was Alfred's hand which darted out and seized his heavy cane . . . (Continued tomorrow)
