State Police To Check Violations By Trucks, Busses INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., July 28. State police troopers will tighten enforcement against truck and bus drivers observed violating the state speed limit, Col. Robert Rossow,' department superintendent, announced today. Orders have gone out to the 10 state police posts, he said, to "rigidly" enforce the law which permits buses a maximum speed of 50 miles an hour and trucks 45 miles an hour. He indicated similar action will be taken against passenger automobile operators who drive at "unreasonable and unsafe" speeds. Colonel Rossow, in a letter to

bus and truck association officials, asserted he has received "many" complaints of -speeding by the heavy vehicles. He cited figures showing 18 per cent of state-wide fatal accidents in 1946 involved buses or trucks. Total traffic accidents reported to state police, are up 12 per cent this year, he said. "Our sole interest is that of saving lives," asserted the police executive. "We have no desire to work a hardship on any highway user, but our first job is to re

duce the accident toll.

"Reliable data indicate that

severity of accidents increases as

speeds of the vehicles involved increase. Although other factors are involved, I am certain that

when speeds decline the chances of a fatal result in traffic mishaps will also decline." Colonel Rossow said he plans to confer with the State Highway Commission relative to expanding posted speed zones in the state.

Indiana has no fixed speed limit on open highways, but the commission has authority under law to establish a maximum " limit where conditions warrant.
