Proverbs 4:7. , ,; EDITOR'S NOTE: tenon subjects) and Scripture text selected and coj?yrighted by International Council of Religious Education; used bj permission. By HAROLD L. LUNDQU1ST, D. D. Of The Moody Bible Institute, Chicago. EDUCATION is so widespread in mi An t art? mn r rrr-1f sAtltfVit after, that one might assume that the world would soon solve its problems through the cultural attainments of its people. : clearly In our lesson; for it Is wis1 1 . it.. 1 1 j - wisdom is quite different from the understanding or memorizing of a mass of facts. . ' Wisdom teaches us how to use knowledge effectively for the glory 'of God. We see in our lesson: ' V ftL. I . ..r. . T"t 1:1-5). DROVERBS are pithy, useful say- . ings, which gather up the wisdom ui b pevpic jui easily leiueuivcicu form. They are highly, thought of in all; nations, but reached their highest development among the Hebrews, because they rightly insisted that they must be related to God and worship of him. We learn In this passage that they are given to us that we may "know" that we have both wisdom and instruction. The growth of knowledge is' always a prerequisite to growth In grace learn more about God and his precious Word, and you will have more of his grace upon you.. . Knowledge must be coupled with discernment (v. 2), which speaks of going beyond and below the surface meaning. This will not be an. abstract love of the scholarly, but a practical application of truth to life (v. S). Wisdom results in right living and proper dealing with our neighbors. The on who has corns to this place is ready to give (v. 4) help to others; especially to the young or those of "simple" thinking, who where; they can get hold of such' things' for themselves. ,H '., Notice that the wise man does not op at that point, but because he is wise ne goes on 10 more ana inure understandings, to further receiving and' giving out of "sound counsel!" (v. 5). Observe next, II.' The Value of Wisdom (Prov 8:13-18).. ; THE character of a man shows up in the things he holds to be Valuable. Some cannot see beyond ' gold and silver. Others seek comfort and convenience, and do not wish to be disturbed in their easy ways. , - The wise man knows that for real pleasure of the highest type, for peace of mind and heart, for riches that will last and not bring him Into either sin or sorrow, there is nothing like the cuitivanun VI iuiuciBiauuui win dim. ' This scripture affords us the op portunity to say a needed word to young people who are being so sorely tempted these days to forego their opportunities for an education, and to rush out into the world to make money, more money, yes, the most possible money. Education seems to be unnecessary, a waste of time and effort But wait, the years will come and go, and then when it is too late, the realization will come that a golden opportunity was missed, and that doors of usefulness and effective ness are now closed. ' It nays to give time to the cultiva tion of the mind and of the heart in preparation for life. We are not thinking primarily of the dollars and cents value now, for that is secondary, even though it may be important ; III. The Source of Wisdom (Prov. 9, 10; James 1:5). . ip OD is the source of wisdom, and vji p. is as a man lears nun mat lie becomes wise. The fear of God is not a matter of fright or terror, but. rather a genuine .concern that one may do his will and never fail to be obedient to bis guidance. . i God is always more ready to giva ttian we are to receive Her will not tUrri us aside, or belittle our efforts; but will, if we ask, give1 wisdom. . Let no man think that he can attain ' onto true wisdom . apart from a right relationship to God. He may have knowledge, but not wisdom. On the other hand, let no man who knows God and serves him go through life lacking wis' dom when all he has to do Is to ' ask4 it of his heavenly Father. i 5-i'W:.'overty-strickea - irsea you can be rich Id wisdom and unaerstanduig?-' - . . CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES Troth" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, July 27. The Golden Text is: "0 Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; ... thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth" (Isaiah 25:1). Among- the citation which comprise the Lesson-Setmon is -' the following from the Bible: "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord. Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. A man's heart deviseth his way; but the Lord directeth his steps" (Proverbs 16:1, 8,9). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from tha Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can 'run, and not be weary; . . . walk, and not faint;' who gam good rapidly and holdtheir position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement. When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path" (p. 254). ST. MARY CHURCH Mass Schedule July 27 Sullivan, 7:30. Shelburn, 9:30. PENTECOST CHURCH 502 North Court Street.
