OF INTEREST TO FARMERS ANALYZE PROSPECTS FOR CATTLE FEEDERS LAFAYETTE, J.d. The strong demand for nieats,'.. which has controlled the price situation for fat cattle during the winter and spring is expected to continue into the fall months, according to a recent report of the agricultural economics department of Purdue University. ' Unemployment resulting from strikes or other causes could seriously affect demand for all meats, and in turn lower live values, the economists point out. The continuation of high price levels for meat animals is largely dependent on full employment at high wage levels and government purchases of meats and other foods for relief purposes. In the opinion of M. P. Mitchell, Purdue marketing specialist, general economic conditions should be watched closely as the year progresses. Any serious downturn in the price level would adversely affect cattle

values. (,.The supply of fed cattle will be relatively low during the third quarter of 1947, according to announced marketing intentions of cattle feeders. During the third quarter will be a good time to market top grades of fed cattle. Prices ofc good and choice grades, normally, are highest at that time of year. Prospective supplies of competitive meats are abnormally low for this period also. Mitchell pointed out that "grass cattle" are in a rather uncertain position from the standpoint of seasonal price changes and abnormal , feed conditions which may develop during the grazing season. Prospective increased supplies of pork and the doubt attending general economic conditions in late 1947 make it appear advisable to have fed cattle on the market not later than October 1. The present high level of feed

er cattle prices makes it seem wise to delay starting long-time feeding programs until the 1947

crop conditions can be appraised

in light- of expected changes in the general economic situation.
