At Mt. Kisco a charming slice of suburbia where the Westchester Players have their "straw hat" circuit theatre, that gallant trouper of yesteryear, Fritzi Scheff, went back into harness the other night. . Don't get me wrong this was not another one of those "comebacks," with Frilzi singing "Kiss le Again" for the 3G5,879th time. Oh, no; Miss Scheff, who is now 68, appears as a serious actress in the legitimate theatre, if you please, and was reported thrilled at the prospect- of playing "straight parts" instead of music shows, nightclubs -and concerts. Her role was, aptly enough, that of a retired actress in the thrillerdilleh "Ladies In Retirement.' Fritzi, let me report, is still chic, slim, brown-eyed; possessed of a generous amount of sparkle, ginger, verve and vitality. There's plenty of come-hither left. Not having, been around when she was, as they used to say, "the toast of the town," I can understand how she got that way. ; Just back of the Hudson River and up among the artists, writers and gardens, the seasonal accent in Mt. Kisco is on "soft summer breeze" and "whispering trees" sentimentally mooded lines from a lyric made internationally famous bv Fritzi Scheff when she was "Mile Modiste." But unless you wish to be batted over the bean with a sapling from the Lawrence Farms, where the Westchester Players hold forth, don't ask Fritzi to drag out her "Kiss Me Again" routine. Not just now, at any rate. No one knows better than she how often this light opera classic has been milked for everything it had. Fritzi's tired of it with the accent on the verb. Today, as ten years ago, time's swift passage causes Fritzi few sleepless nights. I talked with her about it when she was in her fifties. - "Don't be silly about age," she scolded. "Never worry about old

age. Far too many people are

Fritzi as "Mile Modiste"

yesterday's stars, whose names

were certain to stir nostalgic

memories.

She was about 20 when she

arrived from the Royal Opera in Munich and joined the Metropolitan Opera cast where, because of

her hoydenish behavior, she became known as "the little devil of grand opera." From there she stepped into Victor Herbert's

light operas and, almost overnight, became "the toast." For

41 years she trouped, before de

ciding upon retirement. But like so many1! of the old-time stars, she spent so lavishly when she was in the big chips that, when the years caught up to her, she

was going to the Actors Fund relief rolls for the S12 a week dole they were then issuing. When the cottages she had bought in Connecticut were mortgagebound, theatrical friends came to the rescue.

All of which seemed incredible

to those who remembered the

days when Fritzi carried a retinue of 10 servants. One of them was an electrician, who received $120 a week to make certain that her name appeared in lights on the dressing-room door. Also there was the famous red carpet that was invariably spread from her carriaga to the stage door. No one else was allowed to use it. But all this was long ago and far away. Enough has happened since to completely stifle a less hardy spirit. But a trouper is a trouper, and at 68 Fritzi Sheff is more interested in the future than the past She's all set for a new career in the "Legitimate."
