The. Presidents Fire Conference
Within the near future, the United States will learn whether or not it is making- progress in the war against fire.
Ihe President s Conference on Fire Prevention, which took place early in May, laid the groundwork for the most intensive and scientific campaign to reduce our staggering losses ever undertaken. Some 3,000 delegates, representing every part of the country, attended. An ambitious and allinclusive program was developed. Every phase of fire prevention activity, from modernization and enforcement of building codes to keeping the public informed of the menace, is involved. It is an emergency program, designed to deal with a real and 'growing emergency condition. These delegates are now working at home. Some of their work will be of a technical nature, such as advising on community fire equipment and the training of fire department personnel. But, in the long run, the success achieved will depend primarily on the amount of public support given it. The great majority of fires are the result of individual ignorance and carelessness. A great part of the disgraceful total is made up of home fires, most of which could be prevented. Making America's, homes safe from fire is strictly a job for every home-owner no one else can do it for him. Fire loss measured in both lives and dollars is at an all-time peak. We have the means and the knowledge to reduce it to a small fraction of its present total. The American people, must decide whether that is worth doing.

tor Claude Pepper, Senator Har'ley Kilgore, Senator Glenn Taylor, Congressman Madden of Indiana, and Congressman Douglas cf California. Republican newspapers like the New York Herald-Tribune and Chicago Tribune condemn the "Truman doctrine." The only effective way to stop Communism is to make democracy work, to give the people jobs and security, to drive the parasites and war-monges out of office, and to work in the United Nations for peace and disarmament. Parent
Editor, Daily Times:
In your editorial of June 10th, "Red Star Over Hungary", intentionally or otherwise, you spread some dangerous anti-Soviet propaganda. In these trying times, when our USA war-mongers are trying to whip up a "Holy War" against "Godless" Russia, newspapers, which are a mighty force for good or vil, should be extremely careful about repeating falsehoods, originated by those who would profit by a war against Russia. " You say: "The iron curtain has fallen with a thud over Hungary". If the "iron curtain" fell, now does it happen that American correspondents have been able to send hundreds of thousands of words telling how Premier Nagy resigned when it was discovered that he was engaged in a plot to restore Fascism to Hungary? ... You say: "Columnist Marquis Childs wrote the other day that all signs point to another Soviet sneak play in Czechoslovakia". Permit me to make a prediction. Bccauue Czechoslovakia has a completely free democratic government and has eliminated all Fascist elements, I predict that the present government will remain in power, with full support of the people, long after Columnist Childs has joined his uniounded "Soviet sneak play" rumor in oblivion. You say: "The Truman doc-, trine is the only' weapon at our disposal if we are serious about combatting communism abroad." This assertion is disputed by millions of patriotic Americans including Henry Wallace, Sena-
Political Gomment
The current confusion caused by too many self-appointed Republican leaders setting themselves up as party spokesmen has Indiana voters, looking to the
1948 elections, wandering about in circles. Talkative Homer Capehart issues almost daily, some statement of party policy and immediately Governor Gates denies the Senior Senator has any authority, by virtue of his standing within the G.O.P., to say anything of particular importance. Likewise, Republicans in Congress, many of whom were elected on promises of an "across the board" tax reduction by Rep. Knutson, now find the promise impossible to fulfill and deny Knutson was speaking with any deree of party authority. "There is a long list of promises and denials that has piled up since the November election. Wild pledges about reduction now are beginning to take on the appearance of jokes; lifting of price controls were to result in a "leveling off of retail prices and increased production, but the consumer is aware of spiraling prices instead of stabilization; they have failed to come through with anything constructive regarding housing. ' The single accomplishment of the bungling Republican leadership is the resolution restricting the Presidential tenure to two terms, carrying the 1 implication that voters of the United States do not have enough common sense to decide for themselves
how long they wish to continue a person in 'public office.

SPEL of CHRIST
THE CHURCH
Whenever the definite article "the" is used before a word it points out something in particular. Especially is this true when the article appears before the word "church." In the first century, this expression meant that there was but one church; and it still means that in the sight of God. Several illustrations in the New Testament teach that there is but one church. The human body is used as an illustration teaching that there is but one church. "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ." I Cor. 12:12. "And he is the head of the body, the church . . ." Col. 1:18. "There is one body . . ," Eph. 4:4. The family is also used as an illustration teaching that there is but one church. "Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God: and such are we." I John 3:1. "So then ye are no more strangers and sojourners but ye are fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God." Eph. 2:19. God has only one family and that family is the church. A third illustration is the fold, or the flock. "And other sheep, I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice: and they 1 shall become one flock, one shepherd." John 10:16. Christ is the good shepherd and the church is the flock. There is one flock and one shepherd. Another example is that of the kingdom. ". . . upon this rock I will build my church;
and thfc gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven . ." Matt. 16:18, 19. There are but two kindgoms: the kingdom of Satan and the kingdom of God. Christ taught that he would build just one church. Still another representation which describes the church is the vineyard. "For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that was a householder, who went out early in the morning to
hire laborers into his vineyard." Matt. 20:1, Those who are in the church are in the vineyard of the Lord. He has only one vineyard and laborers have to work in His vineyard to receive wages from Him. The vine and the branches indicate that there is but one church. "I am the vine, ye are the branches. . . . If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and cast them into the 'fire, and they are burned." John 15:5, 6. Christ is the vine and each Christian is a branch. The Christian. must abide in Christ and to be in Christ is to be in his body, the church. If there are many churches, why did Jesus use the singular number when he said, "I will build MY CHURCH"? If there are more churches than the one church, why did Paul say, "There is one body"? ITpw can there be many churches when Christ said there would be one flock, one shepherd? Surely God has' only on" family. The important question is, "Are you in His family?" 1 ; '
