Shades Campaign Being Set Up; poal Is $300,000 ; INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 4 A public subscription campaign aimed at $300,000 is being

planned by the Indiana Department of Conservation to purchase jThe Shades, John H. Nigh, Conservation director announced to day. j Nigh said actual mechanics of ihe campaign are still to be worked out but added that the department - definitely plans to purchase the historic western Indiana park which last week was saved from destruction by action bf Arthur R. Baxter, Indianapolis manufacturer. Nigh emphasized that Mr. Baxter's purchase of the Shades and jhis lease to the department constituted simply a "holding action". The Baxter Durchase followed breakdown of American Legion 'plans' to save the centurv-old park. The owners immediately ;placed the 1,452 acres on the auction block and began accepting bids from timber companies. The park includes more than 1,000 C

"We have great plans for the Shades," Nigh said, "and we cannot over-emphasize our appreciation of Mr. Baxter's action., "We must not, however, consider the job over. Funds must be raised to repay Mr. Baxter and place title to the area in the hands of the State." The Conservation director said the Shades, which has been operated as a park for almost a century, will be administered from Turkey Run Stete Park, only seven miles away, for the balance of the summer season.
