SATISFACTORY SERVICE Emory Thomson study on salt for hogs. Average daily gain of hogs that received salt was 1.71 pounds, while those receiving none gained only .67 pounds daily. For each pound of salt consumed there were 45 extra pounds of gain. Results of the research work show that each pound of salt saved $5.60 worth of feed, including 147 pounds of corn, 60 pounds of protein supplement and 1.9 pounds of mineral mixture. Average daily consumption of salt for a pig was slightly over one-third of an ounce. The addition of salt in 'the ra tions for two lots of seven pigs each weighing about 57 pounds at the beginning of the study made a difference of 278 pounds in the amount of feed needed for 100 pounds gain. Both lots were fed the same, one receiving no ,salt and the other had loose salt, free choice with the other feeds. The protein supplement was a mixture of 90 pounds of soybean oil meal and 10 pounds of alfalfa leaf meal. The mineral mixture was equal parts of steamed bone meal and pulverized limestone. " Complete results of this study and information on "salt poisoning are reported in Mimeograph Number 23, department of animal husbandry, Purdue University AericultUraT Ex"tjevimerift Station, -'and may be 'pbtained. -.free' writing to the "University'." ,- Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) was a Dutch landscape painter, born at Leyden in 1596. He Btudied under various Dutch masters, then spent a year in France and practiced in Leyden. In 1631 he sold his house there and moved to the Hague where he became a citizen in 1634, and became dean of the Painter's Guild in 1640. His sales of pictures and speculations proved unfortunate, and he died insolvent in 1656.
