Research Club Meets The May meeting of the Research ' Club was held at the Library the 4th. The program was as usual preceded by a luncheon which is always enjoyed. At the business session prer sided over byx the president, Mr. Storckman, the officers for the past year were reelected for the incoming year and it was announced that Mrs. J. H. Gilliland vad received an award for a poem contributed to the Poet's Corner. The awards will be made at a special meeting in .September Roll call was responded to with quotations pertaining to Mother's Day or Current Events, The main part of the program, under the leadership of Mrs. Merle Winkle, was a review and discussion of the chapter on New Hope for the Deaf,' as given in Science Year Book for 1946. ' Mrs. Gilliland reported on the District club meeting held at Hymera and Mjrs. Ida Allen held an interesting quiz on quotations from American poets. This Morning's Headlines THE INDIANA BELL Telephone' Company and the union members, who did not go out on strike because of the State public utilities anti-strike law, have reached an agreement on a wage increase. The Indiana Bell workers will get a $3 to $4 raise per week. The agreement was reached late Saturday night after a session that lasted through most of Saturday.

A GIANT TRANS WORLD Airline Constellation crashed, exploded, and sank, in Deleware Bay, near Cape May, N. J., yesterday, killing the four crew members. They were the only persons on the plane. The airliner was out on a training mission. One wing is believed to have dipped into the water while the plane was flying low, causing it to crash.

PRESIDENT TRUMAN had a very busy Mother's Day. He flew to Grandview, Mo., to see his 94-year-old mother, who was progressing satisfactorily after a fall which resulted in a broken hip. He was called to the bedside as she was reported to be temporarily a little worse. However, the President returned to Washington in the evening when physicians said there was nothing to worry about.

THE PUBLIC ROADS Administration reports that there are almost as many automobiles on the road today as there were before the War. The 1946 registration totaled 33,945,817. In 1941, which was the peak year, the registration was 34,472,145. In 1945 the registration was 30,638,42.9.. The administration expects that 1947 will break the record set in 1941. '

AN EARTHQUAKE KILLED three persons and injured .40 in the Calabria section of southern Italy yesterday. It Caused -widespread damage. The Italian news agency said that twelve towns in the southern part of the country and Sicfly were damaged.- The quake was recorded in this country on seismographs. , "
