High Cost Of Human Carelessness Not every decision can be left to Congress, legislature or council. Not all tasks can be delegated to George Administrator. There are some problems which are as much a responsibility of the public as of officials. Fire prevention is such a problem. It is highlighted by President Trumans' address before a conference which convened in Washington recently at his invitation. - National, state and local governments and many private organizations were represented there, but his challenge also was directed at approximately 140,000,000 other Americans, who can do something about it if they will. . ' Mr. . Truman emphasized the nation's disastrous record in recent years and months, the "long series -of spectacular
fires . , . which have resulted in such great loss of life and ! such widespread misery." The Texas City disaster and the 1 great hotel fires were properly cited as demonstrating the
.nationwide need lor preventive measures. But Americans should be equally shocked by the general Jotals which he also emphasized 830,000 fires annually in the United States, with prospects that' three-quarters of a billion dollars of our wealth may go up in flames this year unless the present rate is reduced. This estimate applies to property loss alone. As he pointed out, no dollar value can ever be put on human lives and other implacable things which fire destroys. 2 The problem must and can be brought home to us. The president mentioned the heavy annual toll in our forests and rural areas. He cited other contributing factors and handi caps which can be observed here and in every other municir pality: "Our legacy of old construction . . . wide areas t . with inadequate fire, protection . . . special hazards of new chemicals and industrial processes . . . grave shortages of experienced fire fighters . . ." One of the best advertisements any community can boast, incidentally, is a fire department with little to do. It indicates that preventive measures are reasonably effective find that facilities for protecting both . lives and' property will be available when need arises. But safeguards everywhere must be taken dailv and
hourly, by .citizens as well as by public and private organiza- . - . tions charged with that responsibility. For the vast majori- Vernon Hayden and family and ty ot our tires an average of more than 2,200 daily are the other relatives and friends. ' result of human carelessness. That is why fire prevention Mr. and Mrs. Ben . Ward are must be a continuing task and why the impetus for effective spending the summer with Morris protection, as Mr. Truman said, "must come from the states Ward of Dodd Bridge, and from everv communitv and everv individual in thfl land." "Pork supplies will be less this spring and summer than a year earlier because of the small 1946 fall pig crop. . The 1947 Spring pig crop is not likely to be far different from that of a year ago according to farmers' reports . on breeding . intentions. Total meat production in the fourth quarter of the year is ex.pected to be at least as large as in the period of a year ago, in view of the increased numbers of cattle being fed for market:"' The Purdue man said cognizance should be taken of the seasonal price variations, reaching a high in late Auguest ' and September but dropping . to the lowest point in December. They added it might be more profitable for farmers to full-feed spring pigs and get them on the late summer ; and early fall market. "
