BEING LOYAL TO TRUE RELIGION LESSON TEXT I Kings 18:20,21.30-39. MEMORY SELECTION-rHear me. O
ord. hear me, tha this people may
now that thou art the ixra odd, hat thou hast turned their heart back gain. I Kings 18:37. God meets the challenge of un
belief and sin through the ages in
is different forms. In the days or Olijah it was the awful power of he false religion of Baal hich hrew its Ball of heathenish im-
norality over the people.
The rjronhet was God's man ol
ourage in a day of unbelief and in. To be courageous means to
teadilv meet perils of which one is
ieeply conscious, doing so because
t the call of duty. Courage holds
i deener and nobler meaning than
hravery. carrying with it the idea
i moral strength and,' m the case I the Christian, faith in God as one
levoted to his cause.
The account of the conflict with
he nroDhets of Baal on Mount
armel is a dramatic and instruc-
ive story. It shows that when God's
nan meets God's enemy there is an
ipen, above-board, honest victory. I. Nothing Bidden (vv. 20-21. SO). The appeal to Israel cut no corers and made no compromises.
"hey must choose between the true
Jod and the false Baal. They could
iot hold to both or halt between two ipinions. The same is true today of ur relationship to Jesus Christ. . The direct challenge at Mount armel follows the same pattern if out-in-the-open dealing with toe
problem.
Men whose deeds are evil love
larkness rather than light. God loes not have to work in the dark.
ill of his workings are in the open
unlight. Everyone is welcome to 'come near" and see what is done. Elijah knew God and he acted ike God's man. What a tragedy it
3 that not all of God's servants
'ave followed his example. If we ad the open and above-board deal'lgs of Elijah in the affairs of our hurches. we might see more of the ire and power of his ministry. Certain it is that the administraion of church affairs which has to e carried out in hidden corners by
vhispered conversations and by
cret manipulations behind the
eertes is not God's worK at au. n u
ne work of man. II. Na Favors Asked (w. S3 35). Fliinh rebuilt the altar himself.
Ie asked no help of the unbelieving
rophets of Baal or of apostate srael. How old-fashioned he seems
n this day when so much stress is nid on a false unity of the faiths, nd there is so much solicitation md acceptance by the church of hp helo of unbelievers in financing
he supposed work of God.
Note also that Elijah invitea nis nemies to make the 'answer to his .raver more difficult by pouring
vnter on the sacrifice. This was not
m act of bravado; it was for the mrpose of demonstrating that there vas no fraud. He was willing that he enemies of the truth should make he demonstration more difficult if hat would be to God's glory. There is a delightful old-fashioned
ilavor about that act, too, in these j lays when men are frequently witN v.r to compromise with unbelief ind even with sin, in order that the work of the church may be carried m without too much difficulty. Here jpnin we have an explanation of
;he lack of spiritual power in our
times. The victory which came was a glorious testimony to the Iivir.g 'ealily and the infinite power of
God. It left
III. No Glory to Man (vv. 30b 32f 15-30). A man of bravery usually wants recognition (or himixlf. whilf- the courageous man fisks only that toe ?au?e for which he fights shall be successful. Elijah had long since cemon.trnted that he was absolutely fearless, and sought no favor or glory 'read the entire story). Now in the tenseness of this moment, he carefully rebuilds the altar of the true
God (v. 30), makes it a testimony of
unity to a divided Israel (v. 31), ind he does it all in the name ol
the Lord (v. 32).
His prayer (vv. 36, 37) is a profoundly simple expression of a com
plete faith in the true God and his
power, on the part of a man who recognized himself as being only ihe divine servant. He made no plea that God would vindicate" him or his ministry, but he did plead that the name of the Lord should be honored in the midst of an unbelieving people, Thfl.fire of the Lord fell." Tha
ly-.g' propjiets, of 'heathendom were: j
as the true God. ..-While, Israel did not long remember'" the lesson learned here, the story has continued as a testimony that will strengthen the people of Gcd as long as time continues.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Adam and Fallen Man" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches o Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, MJy 11. The Golden Text is: As by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made-righteous" (Romans 5:19). Among- the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is . the following from the Bible: "And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou ? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because. I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked ? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat" (Genesis 8:9-11). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Knowledge and pleasure, evolved through material sense, produced the immediate fruits of fear and shame. . . . The first impression material man had of. himself was one of nakedness and shame. Had he lost man's rich inheritance and God '8 behest, dominion over all the earth ? No! This had never been bestowed on Adam" (p. 532).

Sunday, 'America will pause and pay Honor to its MotHerKoo'd. 'All over the land, there will be gifts and loving expressions for living mothers, and sweet memories, a silent tear and d little white flower for those .who sleep.
, ' : x,, Many pf those we will Honor are old. and feeble, witK years of ! patient toil and loving devotion behind them. Others are young,1 like the little mother in this picture, with the mystic light of young , motherhood in their eyes. . The Character ol the American people Has Keen sHape'd more'' largely by mothers than by men. The silent influence of a mother's character is planted deep in the heart of her child ;When people thinK ol tHei'r mothers, the most vivid imprest sions are those of their devotion and toil and the moral and spirit- .' ual teachings they imparted.
