Once Over Lightly

Monday's meeting of the football coaches of the SIAC at Vinj cennes was, surprisingly, somei what of a success. To make the session even workable, it was necessary for a lot of give and take among the different schools, and this sn.irit of co-operation was evident. i While most of the coaches went into the meeting with a chin on their shoulder, with talk 'of l.vithdrawiing from the conference on almost every lip, the hieeting broke up with the cori3hes agreeing that something had been accomplished. The neeting was a long affair. . It started at 1 p. m and ended at 10 p. m. But, there was r some agreement. The first thing that was done was the agreement to divide the conference into two groups, on purely enrollment basis. At first, it was - talked about making it a geographical division, hut that would have put Vincennes and Bloomington in with Washington, Linton, Bicknell and Sullivan. Naturally, Boonville, Princeton, and Huntington howled. They were in with the four Evansville schools. Of. course,. VMcennes. and Bloomington objected to the other grouping, that put them in with the Evansville schools, but they finally agreed to do it that way. It finally was decided to make the enrollment division. With that out of the way, the next thing was the schedule. Both the Arrows and Linton wanted four games in the conference, so that they could meet requirements in the Western Indiana Conference, and still be eligible 14 M tot 56503 fncMe Federal To

for a playoff if they won a division crown in the SIAC. - The two schools got that through. The rest was anti-cli-nax. The only thing that remains is to draw up a schedule, and that will be a headache. The plan is to have each school have three natural rivals, and there will be some bickering on that. Then, each school will have a floating team that is changed every year. That Iwill present the difficulty. To make the schedule come out even, it will be necessary for one of two things to be done. One team will have to play a conference game that will not count, so that the, opponent can get its fourth game on the record. Either that, or the seventh school in each division of the conference will have to meet with that game countine for each school. As Coach Bill Jones said, that is one of the things that remains to be worked out. The new plan does one thing. It gets the task cf picking a conference football champfo.nship on a sensible basis after many years of using a slide rule, and then never being sure. It (will give the smaller schools that have never cut a figvre in the conference Huntington, Princeton, and Wasl'ington a chance at a division crowa 'V It also provides that the winner in each division can chal 3 Farmcraf t HYBRID SEED CORN $6.90to$9,9Q Per Bushel COUNTY HARDWARE VAUGHN F. 1 4 lenge the winner in the other division for a playoff game to find an overall conference winner. This will probably be done in most of the years, for it will increase the interest in the game in the schools. There was still the question of Bedford and Jasper. The coaches expressed doubt that either would ever play football. If they do, they (will go in the smaller division, to try to create some interest in the rame, without the risk of getting tromped on every game. its It is a start. We hope that the conference carries through on the plan, and makes it workable.
