INDIANAPOLIS, May 2 (UP) Time .trials for the 31st annual 500-mile -race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30 will start at noon Saturday, May 17, according to an . announcement today by Jack Mel) an, chief steward. Unless weather conditions interfere with the program, the pole position will be decided by six o'clock that night and railbirds are of the opinion that at least six cars have an excellent chance of smashing the track record established a year ago. Additional trials are scheduled between noon . and 6 p. m. on May 18, 24,. 25 and 28, with provisions made for other dates in case of postponements due to inclement weather. ' Before attempting their qualifying runs, all drivers will be required to pass a physical examination before the Speedway medical staff headed by Dr. E. Rogers Smith. Newcomers to the 500-mile race must pass a driver's test ranging up to 115 miles an hour, ' the minimum speed required of all cars seeking a starting position.
