RATIONAL GLORY AND DECAY LESSON .TEXT I Kings 3;5-9; 5:13-16; ; 1:4-9; . t ' J-j "v'i A .. MEMORY SELECTION Trust In the ,ord with all thine heart; and lean not nlo thine own understanding. Proverbs Success or failure to life: is tletcf nined by the measure, of --a Jfjan 9 evotjon to God and oneaience w ie will of God. We speak now of eal success, not according to thfcj leas of the world. We are conerned with what a man is and' hat he does for God, not with what e may happen to possess. The life of Solomon falls Into iree divisions, corresponding to is early manhood, middle life and Id age. It moves from glory and lessing to tragedy and judgment. I. Wise Youth (3:5-9). - , We use the word youth to cover ie early years of Solomon's reign. 'e was now a young man, but the odly background of his rearing nd his faith in God showed in his iioice of wisdom as God's greatest ift. . ,'. ,. Sometimes we wish God would ive us such an opportunity. "That ; just what he has done. He has ppeared to you, not in dreams, but i broad daylight,, and by his Son esus Christ has said as plainly as e could, 'Ask and it shall be given ou.' He has , repeated i it , three mes, saying, 'Ask, seek, fipd.' And ien he has jeturned to say, 'Everyne that asketh receiveth, and he lat seeketh findeth, and to him iat knocketh it shall be opened.' " re have no right "to say that olomon was more favored than e. We are. more favored than he. C we are not, it is because we ask ot. If we lose peace and joy, happiess and heaven, it is all for want f asking" Joseph Hammond). The noble and intelligent choice f Solomon has been much adlired, and rightly so, for he chose he greatest gift that could come o any man, "an understanding eart." He might have asked foi noney or power, but with the lack f wisdom to use them properly hey would have been, a curse to lim and to others. Long life is but : continued blight to a foolish' man, or it onl7 extends the time of hi 'oily. n. Strong Manhood (5:13-16). The temple of God which David arl wanted to hiiilrl was. bv God'3 I wn decree, built by Solomon. Such tremendous " undertaking called or much in the way' of men and naterials, and Solomon demontrated his great capacity as a milder in bringing the project to a ilorious conclusion- , He also built great cities (I Kings i:17-19), and organized his government (4:1-28) together with poweriil, armed forces. (10:26). All this equired much money and manpower, which the king took by levy rom his people. As long as he talked in the way of the Lord he irospered, and his country grew in landing and in riches. God is interested in the men of his world who are gifted with ibility for mighty projects- and exensive organization. The Lord . is eady to bless such men in our day, ind use their gifts and their money or his glory (see the life story of lenry P. Crowell Breakfast Table utocrat, published by Moody Press). i) ... . The sad thing is that such power s often too much for the spirit of nortal man, and he becomes proud, trrogant and self-willed and then J!od has to turn away from him. Solomon's choice of wisdom had "pleased the Lord" (I Kings 3:10) md God had blessed him. But note he qualifying word "if", in verse 4. Solomon failed God in his later years as king. The tragic results are written for all to read. That vuy none of us should ever go. The esson is plain faith takes blessing rrom God; unbelief brings failure ind sorrow. Let everyone that .hinketh he standeth take heed lest ,e fall. . ... - ; ' III. Sinful Old Age (11:4-9). It would seem that a man who oiows the . Lord , should , grow , in ;raee and become even more intimate with God as he grows old. One night expect that the passing of ears should mellow and sweeten ife.But sad to say, it is often not Jie case. When Solomon was old, he went jfter false gods. How tragic! Little wonder that one of the sajntliest men this writer ever knew prayed constantly as he went on into, his eighties, "Lord, keep.me from ever becoming a wicked old man." Other aid men and women fyes, and all of .us) could well pray the same prayer. : ' , . So it became necessary for God to wrest the kingdom out of the hands of the great Solomon, and Israel goes on! to its history of a (people divided, of disobedience to Gkid, and of ultimate judgment. Of that we shall see more in the weeks just ahead.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Probation after Death" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, April 27. . The Golden Text is:, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept" (I Corinthians 15:19, 20).- - . Among the citations which comprise - the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before' him : But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not be1 fore God" (Ecclesiastes 8:12, 13). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth. Not death, but the understanding of Life, makes man immortal" (p. 485). ST. MARY CHURCH Mass Schedule April 27 Sullivan, 7:30. Dugger, 9:30. PENTECOST CHURCH . 502 North Court Street. . The sdmplo pleasures: of childhbocl are innocent and wholesome, and, - rriay constitute the happiest memories of later years. Fortunate is that', child whose environment tends to promote such happiness. All too quickly this little boy and girl will grow out of carefree childhood, and will be called upon to face the duties and responsibilities of life. Much will depend upon their early training and environment. : 11 the, principles of truth, honesty and right living are instilled in their minds during these early,- impressionable years, they will be prepared to meet the duties, responsibilities and dangers of life as they' come. Every child is entitled to a home in which he can develop d strong character along with his physical growth a home in which the deep spiritual significance of life is impressed upon him from his earliest years. Religion should be the guiding light of every home, and children should . be brought up. in the 'Church and in the faith and knowledge of God. Thus they will walk safely in life, and their lives will prove a blessing and an inspiration to others. ' . ' " '
