SULLIVAN DAILY TIMES-. THURSDAY. APR. 24. 1947.

Business Index For Mar. Same As Feb.; I. U. Review BLOOMINGTON, Ind., April 24 The Indiana University Bu reau of Business Research, in its monthly publication, opined that while "there may be a growing consumer resistance to the present level of prices, there is little indication of its effect in .tho current statistical reports of business." The I. U. Business Review reported that its index lor March was virtually unchanged from February, but still approximately two per cent below the alltime peak that came in July following the temporary lapse of OPA. j . The cost of living rose two per cent in March, and now is about seven per cent above the World War I peak, the publication reported. Raw material prices are at the World War I level while the wholesale price index of finished manufactures is about ten per cent below this peak. Per capita income is more than double, however. ' The Review commented: "Consumers appear to be spending less of their incomes than they did a year ago, but there is no indication that they are spending less than a normal proportion. Dollarwise retail trade is still above a year ago, but probably below last year in actual goods sold. There appears to be no limit to the demand for food and raw materials. Although the offerings of cattle on the Indiana markets were the largest for the month in more than twenty years, prices advanced." STORE

Sewing Interest On Increase With 4-H Girl Members

Interest in sewing is steadily increasing among rural girls. I This is reflected in an announcement that 1,345 counties in 45 states named winners in the 1946 National 4-H Clothing Achievement awards program, or a gain of 144 counties over the preceding year. The 1947 program comprises special training for 4-H Club girls in planning, selecting, constructing, repairing and caring for clothing. They learn to dress appropriately,, becomingly and healthfully, in keeping with the family budget. The girls are also encouraged to make useful articles of wearing apparel and accessories Ly crocheting, knitting or other needlecraft arts. Outstanding records of achieve" ment in this activity are again being recognized by the Spool Cotton Educaton Bureau with merit awards. County winners receive gold-filled medals of honor. The state winner gets an all-expense trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago next December. Twelve state winners selected for national honors each receives a $200 col lege scholarship. Last year's state winner in Indiana was Jean Godfrey of Sullivan. County winners were named in 64 counties. 1 In addition to 45 states, the 1947 4-H Clothing contest is being conducted in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, under the direction of the Extension Service. 1
