Maryam ran out and seized the snake . . . TRISTRAM reached stealthily for the pothook as the viper stared at the immobile Walter. "I'll have it in a moment," Tris whispered. But there was a sudden scream from Maryam who ran out from behind the curtain. With a quick flash of one hand, she seized the snake by the tail. Fortunately, the reptile was torpid with cold and did not rouse until she had thrown it against the side of the tent with another scream. Walter was on his feet in an instant. The snake's head came up with deadly intent but Tristram was ready, and one crushing blow with the pothook brought ranger to an end. Maryam promptly fainted and Walter caught her. She had just been revived and they were sighing in relief when Walter held up a hand. "I heard a step outside," be said. "There! Someone is coming."

Slowly, it cut a foot-long gash. There was no time to move before there was a scraping at the side of the tent and the point of a dagger showed through the silk lining. All watched fascinated as the knife slowly cut a foot-long gash. Yellow fingers appeared at the cut, drawing the edge back enough for a pair of malevolent eyes to stare in at them particularly at the uncovered face of Maryam. Then the ringers withdrew ... There was silence for several moments. "It was Ortuh, the Mongol," Walter said, "I am, sure of it." Maryam whispered, "I must go awayl You will all be involved if they come and find me here!" . "The truth is out," Walter said. "We can only wait." Tristram took his bow and flexed the string. "We shall sell our lives dearly," he said. He faced about quickly when footsteps were heard at the entrance. But it was Lu Chung

"Ortuh will return," Lu Chung told them. who entered. The Chinese gasped at the reception prepared for him. "Was it Lu Chung who cut that hole?" Walter asked. Then it was his turn to gasp when he saw that the knife had been left in the slit . . . Lu Chung denied that it had been his work. He, himself, was in trouble with his accounts for Bayan and had come to discuss possible escape.' But a glimmer of hope showed in the eyes of the Chinese when he saw that the knife had been left behind. "It is a sign that Ortuh will return," he said. "He will not tell what he has seen but will try to make a bargain." "Then I am sure that we can get away," Walter said. "I have been thinking of a plan for some time. Tomorrow morning we will try it ..." (Continued tomorrow)
