GOSPEL of CHRIST
SALVATION BY
"For by grace have ye been saved through ith; and that is not of yourselves, it is the
& ft of God." What is it that "is the gift of
dod"? It is salvation, The salvation by grace, I appropriated "through faith," with its rich proisions, is wholly of God; it is Hiis free gift to i an. But in the bestowal of any gift, whether ,: i i nature or grace, two persons are always ini olved the Giver and the Receiver. Cd is the racious Giver, jnan is the needy receiver. j Moreover, no girt can be accepted uncondi- ; I o:ially; man must act in its reception. In its
inception, no less than three acts are performed
1y the recipient. 1) His heart must act, must clfeve the giver is honest in proposing the offr; 2) His will must act, he determines to accept : and, 3) His hand must go out to lay hold of nd appropriate the favor; it is then his posseson not before. The application: The loving ather, through Christ, offers salvation to lost lan. 1) -tie must "believe through grace" (Acts
8-37); 2) He must will to accept it; "he that
ill,, let him take the water of life freely" (Rev. 1:17); and, 3) His faith, "working through ve " lays hold cf salvation Gal. 4:6). Salvation, therefore, being "tW gift of God,"
djes not void obedience; it always includes-it
-thcre is no exception to it. Faith is a gift of )d, given by hearing his word (Rom. 10:17). Hut it is also an act of obedience. "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he Hath sent." (Jno. 6:29). Repentance is a gift of dod Acts 11:18), but .God "commajideth men
Qiat they should ail everywhere repent" (Acts
:30. Eternal life te a gift. "But the free gift God is eternal life" (Rom. 6:23). Yet it is iSoysd conditionally. "He:, became unto all
icm that obey him the author of eternal sal
vation" (Heb. 5:0). The Holy Spirit is given of God; But God must be obeyed to receive him.
GRACE EPH. 2:8 "So is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given , , to them that obey him" (Acts 5:32). Christ is God's priceless gift. "Much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace cf the one man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many" (Rom. 5:15). But Christ must be received. "Much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:17). Who is to "reign in life"? They that receive the abundance of grace." More, how does one become acceptable to God? "Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of
persons: but la every nation he that f eareth him, and worketh righteousness,' is acceptable
to him" (Acts 10:34, 35).
This principle is no less true in nature. God
gaVe Israel "Bread out of heaven" (Jno. 6:31)
, Yet, to live, the nation must gather it and eat
it or starve. To the 'same people, he gave wa
ter from the flinty rock (Ex. 16); but they had to dip and drink or famish. To all God gives - air to breathe, but each one must inhale and
exhale wr die. Whether therefore in nature or
grace all of God's gifts are enjoyed condi
tionally.
In the appropriation of valuable gifts, nothing is earned; the receiver gets so much for what
he does, it has to be by grace. He must act, but his acts are not meritorious. An example: The Pentecostians -were to "knew assuredly," believe fully, Jesus was "both Lord and Christ." They asked, "What shall we do? And Peter
said Unto them, (Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chri.st unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:36-
38. in believing, repenting, and being baptized, salvation was conferred by grace. Follow the series.

On Monday, registration for the May primary for city offices closes. . .
According to figures released by the County Clerk, al-1 most one-fourth of the voters in the city of Sullivan will have ' their names removed from the registration list because they"., failed to vote in the last general election. ! It is' a sad indictment against the American people when j a percentage that large is faced with the loss of their vote in an election. It shows poor citizenship. ( The primary to be held in May will choose the candidates 1 for the November election. If the citizens of Sullivan want to have good officers for the next four vears, if they want to elect the men that they feel should be in office, it is their
uuty 10 register oeiore tne Monday deadline. , If you don't vote, you can't criticize the men who are elected. Register, so that you can vote!
