We Have Undesirable Minorities, Too . Brotherhood Week, now being observed ' throughout America under the sponsorship of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, directs needed attention to the rights ofall citizens, regardless of their religion, race or national origin. In war or in peace, these rights must be respected if we are to make democracy work. - . During the recent conflict, we achieved a better record i'cr tolerance and justice than in the years of World War I. Many Japanese-Americans were treated unfairly, even brutally, but other Americans who spoke in their defense were listened to more respectfully than those who attempted to defend citizens of Germanic origin 30 years ago. ; However, in these days of peace, when it should be easier to practice what we preach about democratic rights, there isjnereasing evidence that vigilance is needed lest ;the principles we esteem so highly be violated. . ... Democracy was not working in fouth Carolina Monday the second day of Brotherhood Week when a white mob removed a Negro prisoner from a jail, then shot and stabbed him to death. '.--. It is not working satisfactorily in parts of the south where our Bilbos and Talmadges raise the phony issue of white supremacy and would deny Negro citizens the right to participate in the selection of public officials. It is not working on those states, north and south, where the Ku Klux Klan and other "hate" organizations are growing bolder; as shown by recent public advertisements, for members to licit) in their campaigns of intimidation against Jews and Catholics as well as Negroes. . It is not working as well as could be desired in our great cities, and even in some of our tax-supported educational institutions. - - These imperfections are abetted by some well-meaning citizens through indifference and -unjustified tolerance toward the undesirable kind of minorities, those which would

These minorities have no such privileges under the Declaration of Independence, which' proclaims: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that iovy arc endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit IJpppiness." .... Nor are any rights granted, to such minorities in the Constitution, which, in seeking to promote the general welfare, stipulates that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," and further declares: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States, nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." If our democracy were perfect in all its operations, there might be no occasion for Brotherhood Week. But because democracy is a goal toward which we are still striving, we need the stimulus to greater tolerance and justice which its messages bring. "...

Helpful Hints On Withholding Statements Given ' For the thousands of wage earners in the Indiana district who plan- to fill out their Withholding Statements as their ' income tax returns, F. Shirley Wilcox, Collector of Internal Revenue, today offered the following helpful suggestions: - a. On the back of the form, watch the instructions under Lines 2 and 3 to make sure you are eligible to use this form. i b. Be sure- to fill out every line on the back of the form that applies to you. c. If you had more than one job where tax was withheld last year, you should have a statement from each employer. In that case, fill out only one of the statements, ! but , attach all the other statements to ' it. Add up your wages and write the total on Line 1. d. If husband and wife are filing together, do same as in preceting paragraph. ' ' e. If single, disregard Line 4. If married, answer the questions in Line 4 very carefully to assume proper exemptions for yourselves. : f. List only dependents in up
per right hand spaces (not self and wife). ' ' ' g. Be sure to sign in the lower righthand space. If husband and wife are filing together, both should sign. h. Don't make any reductions from your income. When you file on this form, the Collector will give you both your exemptions and an automatic allowance equal'' to about 10 per -cent of your income, before figuring the tax. Then, he'll give you credit for the tax which was withheld from your wages, and send you either a bill or a. refund for the difference. ' i. Make sure your correct address is shown on the front of the form. j. Mail your return to "Collector of Internal Revenue, Federal Building, Indianapolis C, Indiana" or to an Internal Revenue Office located in your locality-before March 15.

. M?ny work hard in order to provide for their families, -pay their debts and to maintain a respectahle standard among their neighbors. Should a reproach be cast against their name, -it would be resented. ' And rightly- so. Why? Because their name means much to them. Yet nvmy of these same people, when it is pointed out to them that they are wearing religious names not found in the Bible, will say disdainfully, "Well, what's in a name?" Consistency, where art thou? Does God consider that there is anything in a name? If there is nothing in a name, why did God' change Abram's name' to Abraham? (Gen. 17:3) .Why did He change Sarai's name to Sarah? (Gen. 17:13, 16) Whv did He change Jacob's name to Israel? (Gen. 32-27-28) Whv did He name John before his birth? (Luke 1:13) Why did He name Jesus before his birth? (Matt. 1:21) Thus we see the attitude of God in the matter. . ... . As to the name God's children, wear, let us consider the scriptures. "And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name." (Isaiah 62:2) The Lord, not uninspired man, would designate the name, and that when the Gentiles had seen His righteousness, and the kings His glory. The Gentiles did see the Lord's righteousness in conversion of Cornelius and his household, representative of Gentiles as set forth in Acts, the : tenth chapter. Earlier the envious kings of the earth became aware cf the Lord's glory. (Acts 4:26). Further, "Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than ; of sons and of daughters: Lwill give them an everlasting name to those ii) his house."
In I Tim. o:13 we learn- that the house cf God is the -church; Therefore, those in the church hear the name. Paul was chosen of God to bear His name 'before Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel." (Acts 9:13). Now, in the eleventh chapter of Acts with all the foregoing conditions met, we find . . they (Paul and Barnabas) assembled themselves with the church, and. taught much people. AND THE DISCIPLES WERE CALLED CHRISTIANS FIRST IN ANTIOCH." (Verse 26) CHRISTIAN, then. s the God-given name His children wear. . . v Yet some, in an effort to justify some man-given name which they wear, will sav that the name CHRISTIAN was given in derision by the enemies of the earlv s?ints. Let Peter refute that statement: "But if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let h'm glorifv God in this name." (I Peter 4:16, A. V.) The name CHRISTIAN is never used as an adjective in the New Testament, but always as a noun. Hence, the church, the twdv of Christians is called the CHURCH OF GOD (I Cor. 1:2), the CHURCH OF CHRIST (Matt. 16:18 and Rom, 16:16) and the CHURCH OF THE LORD (Acts 20:28, A. V.) , - Man-given religious names are derisive in character; designating particular Darties.' They are sectarian in pur
pose and effect, separating some pro- I fessed believers from others by their f
peculiarities. Therefore, they are antagonistic to the spirit of Christ (see John 17:20-21) and condemned in the New Testament (I Cor. 1:10-13). They honor some man. exalt some church ordinance, or designate some particular manner of church government. Thus they divert honor belonging to Christ. Are you honoring Christ? Can you find the name you wear, in the Bible?
