Squirrels And Skittishness
Squirrels have been studied from various points of view. I Emphasis on their prudent provisioning habits may have I been overdrawn. The fact that they munch nuts in a highly o.s(entatious and usually noisy fashion may not have been ? suesseil enough. Children probably should be taught to view this habit with reserve.
RUSSIA IGNORES SMITH'S APPEAL A personal appeal by Ambassador W. Bedell Smith in Moscow to Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov for negotiations to settle Russia's $11,260,000,000 lend-lease account has brought no result, the Senate Appropriations Committee learned yesterday. Senators said Chester T. Lane, lend-lease administrator, reported the failure of Smith's appeal and of earlier notes, asking the Soviets to discuss a settlement.
BRITISH CABINET SPLIT ON PALESTINE PROBLEM The British Cabinet was split last night on a solution to the critical Palestine problem, authoritative sources said, but hoped to present completed proposals to Arab and Jewish representatives here by today.

But we have a feeling that both children and squirrels Thomas of Purdue University, are far ahead of the rest of us in one way. Somehow they are visiting at their homes in manage to get together. It may be a strictly Boston or Der- and near Fairbanks-
haps big-city phenomenon, but there is a great camaraderie among certain wild folk and certain young folk on the Boston Common.
It lias taken some experience in a kindly environment, no Vioubt, and considerable patience on both sides. A bag of peanuts is almost indispensable. But we think a general attitude rf trust is the real kernel of the matter. Once-in a while a skittish fellow turns up an out-of-
iiown squirrel, perhaps, untamiliar with Common wavs. He

Sullivan, Ind. . IN THE HEAET OF SULLIVAN ON 41 When In Sullivan, It's The "Sullhran"
She said, "I long for an end to all this slow hate." BESIDE myself with anger, I listened as Teleia explained how she had escaped Hulls' hurricane. -"As he raised the whip," she said, '.'I told him, 'I've heard the story of Kails. I've also heard of his love for Angclique.' " "That did it. He lowered his arm and he said,' Tm sorry, Angclique.' He said it again. Then he walked out." "You're lucky," I said. "You should have a guardian. Do you trust him now?" She put a hand on my shoulder "I think so, Sam. 1 long for an end to all this slow hate." 1 Her face was raised to mine. "There Is one question I wish you'd answer," I said, tempted to ask her xi she could ever learn to love Sam Rosnn. I saw she traveled with me. But foolishly, cowardly, I blurted, "If I don't put in at t'ne Quean, all hell will pop loose." I stalked toward the gate,
"Going somewhere?" I called up to Ralls. turned and saw her staring after me. "You gave me advice last evening," I said. "I could use more." . . "At the pool this evening Sam." ... The Quean sat lazily in the lagoon. A pair of Malays swung brushes on the bowsprit while another pair worked up in the foresail; on deck Hipper and Tewelliger labored over a large sheet of canvas. I paused on the beach, thinking, Going somewhere, Ralls? Industry again, for what? I decided to put a stop to the show. . Then I sa w the skipper up the 'mainmast ratlines. Now he was a stranger with a familiar face, the son of Taaro Tiki, the master of the Golden Hind. "Hello Sam," he cried out, "I didn't let you down at sunrise. I saw you in the swamp rvmnii hack for somefhins." .
"Going somewhere?" 1 said coldly,

"You're wasting your time," I told them. 'Teah. And I think you know where." He climbed down. "Couverted, Sam?" "No," slowly, "just prejudiced. The day's gone, Ralls, when your whims lay my head on the chopping block." The others were watching us. Ralls laughed. I was in a bad mood and anxious for a showdown. I said, "Ripper, you and Tewelliger are wasting your tune. This ship isn't going anywhere." "Talk sense, Sam," Ralls said. ' "To whom?" I answered, setting a foot aboard the ship and disappearing across the deck and below. Five minutes later I felt the lulling advance of sleep, and when I next opened my eyes the blistering sun threw the Quean's shadow straight to the bottom of the lasooa. . . . (Continued "
