OF INTEREST TO FARMERS . LAFAYETTE, Ind., Feb. 4 Agricultural research workers at Purdue University now have an answer to the question, "Will the plow sole method applying fertilizer be as effective on fall plowed land as on spring plowed land?" The answer is sometimes "Yes" and sometimes "No." ' . John E. Larsen and Dr. Helmut Kohnke, university agricultural experiment station agronomists, in reporting the results of their study say, "Fertilizer having nitrogen in the ammonium form may be plowed under in the fall on these Indiana soils on which leaching is not a major problem." Nitrogen presents a problem to the farmer, in that it leaches out when in the form of nitrates, which are water soluble. However, if nitrogen is in the soil as a component of humus or as amonia, as for instance, in ammonia sulfate fertilizer, it is retained by the soil. Therefore, in the experiment, nitrogen was applied in the ammonium form and in addition, straw at he rate of one and one-half tons per acre was plowed under. Straw both slows down the change of nitrogen' to water soluble nitrates and holds the nitrogen as non-leach-j ing organic nitrogen. In the experiment, fall plow-ed-under ammonium sulfate did not, disappear in any appreciable amount during the winter months on the Crosby silt loam plots, lo cated near Lafayette. This type i of soil prevails over a broad stretch of central Indiana. The added straw also retarded losses. Plots on sandy soil near Rochester lost only a little more ammonium nitrogen than the heavier soils However, nitrogen applied as nitrates, on ,the sandy soil had almost completely leached away by the following May, even with the addition of straw. Yet on the heavier Crosby silt loam, nitrates were completely retained during the winter and leached away only slightly during the summer, showing the difference in the ability of the two types of soil to hold nitrates. There was no significant dif ference in corn yields between lau and spring applications of ammonium sulfate on cither the Miami of the Crosby soils. On the third series of plots which were located on poorly drained Vigo silt loam, common to parts of southern Indiana, fall applications of fertilizer resulted in much lower yields than spring applications. This difference, Dr. Kohnke stated, was due to the very poor tilth of the soil, tha soil tending to run together, under the influence of rains and freezing and thawing conditions in winter. "Ship dead ahead!" came
EVEN as the tide rolled in, the Golden Hind, under the dimmed eye of a weak western moon, cleared the port. It was only a few hours after Ralls had left Angelique and Sidneye. Ralls stood at the mist-wrapped rail and stared toward the sea, leaving the first mate to carry out his order, "East to one hundred fifteen. All sail. And have the steward bring gin from my cabin." The ship charged into the mist. The mate approached Ralls. "The sail is pullin' hard, sir, and the lookout says he caught sight of big waves ahead. She'll plow blind into them waves without risin with 'em." ' "Damn you and the lookout." , ''t . 'y "Aye, sir," the mate said 'dejectedly. The sky ahead grew notoriously black and the Hind plowed through like a dumb animal. The waves rolled over

HEALTH FACTS I FOR HOOSIER FOLK PUBLIC HELP ASKED IN BATTLE AGAINST VENEREAL DISEASE Pointing to a need for strengthening protective and preventive measures against venereal disease, the Committee on Venereal Disease of the Indiana State Medical Association today urged community leaders to observe Hygiene Day, February 5, 1947. ; "Since the war's end many communities have relaxed enforcement of laws against prostitution," said a bulletin issued by the committee. "At the end of last June, 16 per cent of cities studied by the American Social, Hygiene Association showed bad conditions as compared with four per cent in early 1945. Failure of Congress to provide for federal social protection assistance to the states and communities for. the current year makes the situation more critical. "Medical measures alone cannot conquer VD. All the penicillin in all the laboratories in the world, all the search of medical science for newer and better means of diagnosis and treatment, all the painstaking care in using these weapons against infection, can not wipe out syphilis and gonorrhea unaided. The path out of the shadow lies through strong . support by individuals and groups of medical efforts and by stimulating public demand for venereal disease control measures. "Stamp Out Venereal Disease; Prevention is the Watchword" has been adopted as the slogan for Social Hygiene Day February 5. Programs will stress character training, . and high standards of moral conduct, as j well as improved community conditions, as preventive measures. The Bulletin pointed out that health officers report new cases of VD are increasing sharply, and added: "To the slackening of public interest and support after the war is added a more potent factor over-confidence, in the public mind, especially among youths, regarding the effectiveness of penicillin and other lew

"Shorten her and bring her more to windward," Ralls said. :. Still the Hind rushed on. The lookout yelled frantically, "Ship dead ahead off port bow, Chinese junk!" A ghostly shape cut the mist, revealing a huge three-master junk. Her excitement exceeded that aboard the Dutch ship; she veered madly to starboard and the Golden Hind's martingale slapped a howling Chinaman from the stern. Neither ship bothered to toss a line as the junk disappeared. A zeeman breathed, "Verdomd! A narrow squeeze. The Chink was scudding, he was!" On and on in her mad flight raced The Golden Hind. Day

Ralls said, "She's your ship after I make port Give her full sail!" - Ralls took the wheel while a gaunt, leveling serenity claimed his eyes and half-smiling lips. He was still there when they approached the island of the pearls and he raced the ship into the narrow coral mouth of the lagoon while the crew waited with bulging eyes for the crash. The Golden Hind struck with a jar that almost jumped her masts. She groaned at the mortal blow, her sides ripped open, then stood there on even keel a monument to despair -' and thwarted love . , .
