Adult 4-H Leader Schools To Be Held Next Month

Of Liquor And Politics From present indications, Republican legislators who are anxiously awaiting Governor. Gates' "follow through" on a state convention promise of legislation divorcing beer and liquor from politics in Indiana, are doomed for a considerable wait. It is evident in the Indiana General Assembly that the all-important liquor bill will be withheld until the closingdays of the session, obviously in the hope that it can be rushed through without too much discussion from the floor and too much opportunity for amendments. - The Republicans, in adopting their state platform, dedined to include a beer-liquor divorcement plank in spite of the smelly pie-convention mess in which William E. Jenner, II. S. senatorial candidate and former state chairman who dealt out the beer wholesaler licenses, was charged by a powerful Indianapolis newspaper with acceptng campaign "slush funds" from the beer and liquor industry. The heat became such that Governor Gates had to face the state convention with a promise that something would ,be done about the situation in the 1947 legislature. Incidentally, what ever became of that notorious libel suit, brought by Mr. Jenner, now United States Senator, against the Indianapolis newspaper? Could it be possible that since he won the nomination and election, Senator Jenner decided his character wasn't so badly damaged after all?

I Training conferences for Hoosier i adult 4-H club leaders will be j sponsored for the eighth year by I the Purdue University Agricultural Extension Service and the Indiana Rotary Clubs. The series of ten meetings will open with a one-day school at Evansville, Feb. 4, followed by schools at Washington, Feb. . 5; Shelbyville, Feb. 6; and at Aurora, Feb. 7, the first week. The remainder of the meetings will be held at Logansport, Feb. 10; Huntington, Feb. 11; LaPorte, Feb. 17; Anderson, Feb. 25: Lebanon, Mar. 7 and Terre Haute, Mar. 11. Each conference will begin at 9 o'clock with "starters" for 4-H'ers . under the direction of F. L. . McReynolds, of Purdue, recreation specialist of the State 4-H club offices. Group discussions on building better clubs will be led by members of the state club supervisory staff. A period for "musical suggestions" has been arranged for the close of each morning session. These will conducted by Albert P. Stewart, director of musical ac

tivities of the university. He will be assisted by William Luhman, pianist. "Fun With Music" will start off the afternoon program and will also be directed by the Purdue men. Major problems to be considered in the afternoon discussion hour will be providing more jobs for junior leaders, securing interest and help of parents and making meetings more interesting to club members. The program will close with a recreation demonstration of socializers for youth, planned by Mr. McReynolds. The Rotary Club in each city where the meetings are to be held will entertain the leaders at a luncheon or a dinner.

"It is a story of a quatrefoil and a golden hind," he said.

"Man adrift," the lookout cried.

THAT night, in the strange blue room, Mayrant Sidneye told me a long story "a story of a quatrefoi) and a golden hind," he called it. I knew it was meant to show me what Ralls really was like and why Sidneye was deterniincd to find the Red Witch and her cargo of gold. As a boy, he had shipped on the Rreat craft Quatrejoil. When he had grown .to be the head of a vast Pacific empire, he had used the Qvafrcfoil to kidnap a man who had caused his father's suicide. His revenge was obtained but it was necessary that the Qvatrefoil appear tn have been sunk. ' Secretly, the ship was repainted and refitted, emerging as the luxurious Golden Hind. On it. in 19'25. a wealthy Mayrant Sidneye of fifty years, cruised the southern waters while his many underlings did the work of Batiak, Ltd: ' The Golden Hind was racing obliquely with the wind o!f

the Gilbert Islands one day the story went when the zeeman in the rigging cried, "Man adrift dead ahead!" Sidneye strode to the bow and leveled his glass. The sight which met htm made him cry, "Drop a charge into the water to drive off the sharks." . The man they saw was lashed to a log with an outrigger which kept it from turning under. But it bobbed sufficiently to lure the sharks which dashed in to strike. And those who watched knew that this torture and slow death was one reserved by natives for a white man who molested a girl of the Gilberts. But Sidneye saw no blood on this man. Sharks dashed up but swerved away. Why? He squinted and then he saw a straining of the man's chest. He was saving his breath for the shouts which temporarily frightened them off and he

"Drop a charge to drive off sharks," he ordered. actually grinned at the devils, seeming to enjoy the deadly game. Within fifteen minutes the victim was on deck, had a drink and met Sidneye's gaze with level eyes. "Ralls" was the only name he would give. But in his face Sidneye discovered that which had forever evaded him: equality. Respect, mutual and eternal, was born out of the clash of two pairs of eyes. Therefore Sidneye listened when Ralls told of an island where natives kept a great quantity of pearls. "I would have had them but my machine gun jammed," Ralls said. "They built a fire around me but I wished for rain and got a flashing frownind hid the respect he was forced to extend .aboard this ship, you get half . . ." . (Continued tomorrow)
