THE first person Etienne saw when he stepped off the boat in New Orleans was Walter McGarth, an old friend. He came rushing forward, putting out the one hand he had left and crying, " 'Tienne! So I'm not the only one who came back. Thaftk God for that!" . , 'Tienne's face was grave. "What do we do now?" "Pick up the pieces, I reckon. You've come for your father, 'Tienne?" He told how. Stephen was in the Fort Jackson hospital and could be released to a relative with a pass from the Commissioner of Police. ' Etienne hurried to the police building. A clerk who came from an office marked "Cyrus R. Inchcliff, commissioner" gave him the pass. "Heah yo pass," he grinned. "The Commissioner say you come back here with yo daddy." On the hospital gallery, Etienne found the tall man with

white hair and fierce old falcon eyes. "Father," he ventured ..." 'Tienne!" Stephen whispered. "I've waited." As they had been ordered to, the two men made their way back to the police building. This time they were ushered immediately into the commissioner's office. Their eyes widened at the. familiar figure which came toward them. "Inch!" they both said at the same time. Smoothly, the former slave welcomed them, enjoying his triumph. In the strange meeting which followed, he also permitted Etienne to learn how Ceclie had consorted with Yankee officers. But n the end, when it was time to go, Stephen told him, "I don't know whether or not this ts your way of taking vengeance for your years of bondnge. Inch. If it is, ye're being unwise. Ye can't win, ye know that."

"Yes," Inch said a little sadly. "1 know MvThis came too soon. We weren't ready. But man is a herd animal. The spotted Brahmin claims no lordship over the red Jersey. They all browse peacefully in the meadow together." "Neverl" Etienne said. . "Never is a long time," said Inch quietly. "You'll find a carriage outside waiting to take you to Harrow. If there is ever anything I can do . . ." "Thank ye," Stephen said. "Goodday to ye." Riding out to Harrow, Etienne was silent. Stephen said "About Ceclie. I think that was a lie." "No, Father. There was something about her letters." "Ye'll do her no violence. Send her away if ye must." Etienne looked out over the face of the river. "I shan't touch her, Father," he said. Tolstoi Museum Opened

MOSCOW (UP) A new Tolstoi museum has been opened in the former stationmaster's house in the little town 112 miles southeast of Moscow where the famous author spent his last days and died. The bed in which Tolstoi

died and all the furnishings of the house as they were in 1910 have been preserved intact.
