Polio Toll In U. S, Soars Over 25,009 Mark NEW YORK, Jan. 9 Toll of the country's appalling polio epidemic of 1948 soared above

1 the 25,000 mark as fairly complete figures on total number of cases were announced today by Basil O'Connor, president of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. J Terming the situation "verygrave" O'Connor appealed for a $24,000,000 fund to be raised during the coming March of Dimesdrive throughout the nation Jan. 15-30. This amount is the absolute minimum necessary to enable the Foundation to continue I its unified fight against the I disease, he declared. j Latest U. S. of dollars of local Foundation funds were exhausted. Total of $30,000,000 required to provide proper medical treatment and after care to these more than 25,000 infantile paralysis patienls alone. This staggering sum is based on long established medical estimates that the average cost per patient in infantile paralysis is $1,200, O'Connor said. A summary of the epidemic now being completed by the Foundation shows that the stealthy spread of the ravaging disease during 1946 made a new high record, equalled or exceeded only once in history 1916.

There have been 100,822 cases of polio in the eight years since the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was established in 1939 and .one-fourth of these occurred in the year just closed, ' O'Connor said. He added: "We face a very grave situation. The enormity of the violent epidemic of 1946 is starkly revealed in the grim totals now at Hand.

"For example, one state alone Minnesota as of December 21 had a total of 2,825 cases. Into that stricken state the National Foundation poured $1,293,005 from its epidemic aid reserve. Every available medical assistance was provided to meet the extreme emergency. !Even now, more , money is

steaoily being sent into a number of states suffering from the terrible aftermath of the epidemic and where1 local chapters of the National. Foundation are without funds. "The story of this heroic fight of 1946 is one of. preparedness. Because of the , whole-hearted support always given March of Dimes campaigns the National

Foundation was fully equipped

and ready to meet the unexpected challenge. "Every child, every adult was given prompt and adequate care as their cases were given Foundation . attention. And despite the requirements of these

thousands of cases the National Foundation maintained its pledge to pay all expenses in every case .where cost of treatment would mean lowering the standard of living for the patient or family. 1 "The epidemic has left the National Foundation low in funds but with a high determination to continue the fight on every front. With epidemic funds used up we have been forced to borrow from sums set aside lor research wherein lies the ultimate hope of j final victory. j "This money must be repaid.

Chapter funds must bz restored. The epidemic fund must be rebuilt and be ready for instant use when any outbreak occurs. "That is why a minimum amount of $24,000,000 has been fixed, for the first time, for the March of Dimes drive. Millions of people support the National Foundation with their dollars and dimes because they believe the unified fight provides the best protection, the best treatment and care and the best assurance of ultimate victory. "They will provide the money

i so urcentlv needed, so that if

and- when polio strikes again, it

will not be a tragedy caused by 'too little and too late.' " AUSTRALIANS SMOKE UP

CANEERRA, Australia (UP)

The average Australian smoked 3.3 pounds of tobacco and paid 3 15 shillings 2 pence (about $18.28) for it in 1945-4C, Radio Australia reports. Smokers used about 18,000,000 pounds of imported tobacco leaf and 4.500,000 pounds of Australian tobacco.

AT DUGGER, the Bulldogs played host but gave no quarter to the Switz City quintet in a see-saw battle that ended in a 25-32 Bulldog' finish. The Switzers' death toll was played at the Eulldog foul line where Coach Tom Leaman's boys hit thirteen of seventeen charity tosses. The Switzers, led by Landis, a one-man scoring tabulator, who trapped seven buckets and

two free throws, hit twelve fielders to the Bulldogs' eleven. However, they capitalized on only
