Leonardo's 'Last Supper Is Damaged Beyond Repair

MILAN, Italy (UP) A jumble of faded colored blots is all that remains today of one of the world's great masterpieces Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper." Exposure to wind and rain after Allied bombs partially destroyed the refectory of Milan's church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie where Leonardo created his greatest work of art has irreparably added to the damage crused by chemical agents through the centuries. Leonardo's greatest mistake was to paint his fresco on an extraordinarily damp wall with self-invented, untested pigments. The blotched remnants proved they were a failure. Corrosion already was spreading swiftly over the painting at the time of the "great plague" in 1628 when the entire interior of Santa Maria Delle Grazie was covered with a thick layer of white plaster. The "decorators," however, luckily spared the "supper" but the condition of the fresco and the church got steadily worse until 1937. In that

year, tiie Italian government agreed to restore Santa Maria Delle Grazie with the financial aid of Designer Sen. Ettore Conti. What little was done' to the fresco was-'a mere fulfillment of an artistic duty, as experts already were firmly convinced that it was beyond restoration. When Italy plunged into war

in 1940, the fresco was covered with layers of sandbags. Allied bombs destroyed three walls of the refectory, however, and during the next few years, the sun, wind and rain added to the toll of the centuries. While the refectory is now being rebuilt, nothing can be done with the fresco, which soon will become nothing but a memory. MARRIAGE LICENSES

'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His word, Just to rest upon,' HiSv"iromise '"" Just to know "Thus saith the Lord."

GOSPEL of CHRIST TIIE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH

Today with many devisions and much confusion on every hand this subiect is overlooked bv many in the study of faith. Paul said. 'Novv to him that is of power to establish you according to my gnsoel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, pocordinw to the revelation of the mvstery, which was kept secret si'ir the world heron, but now is made manifest, and bv the Scrintures of the niouhet, according t the commandment of Ihe pverlastinr God. de known fn all nations for THE OBEDIFNCE OF FAITH." Rom. 16:25, 26. When the Gosrel of Christ is preached today to earnest, honest son's, it causes tV sitn OBEDIENCE OF F4ITH a did the Bible examples: "And the Word of G"d increased: and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a ewt rnmnanv of the priests were OBEDIENT TO THE FAITH." Acts 6:7. There are hundreds of faiths not found in the Bible which are without divine approval and have NO value to the i salvation of one's soul. "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the COMMON SALVATION, it was needful for me to write unto you. and evort vou that ve should EARNESTLY CONTEND FOR THE FAITH which was ONCE DELIVERED UNTO THE SAINTS." Jude 3. ALL SHOULD CONTEND FOR THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST. NEW TESTAMENT ?nd NO other faith, free from theories of men. Salvation is THROUGH OBEDIENCE OF FAITH and NOT by faith only; "Arid being made perfect, he (Christ) became the author of eternal salvation unto ALL THEM THAT OBEY HIM." Heb. 5:9. On the other hand those who refuse to obey this faith will receive eternal condemnation;

Paul said: "In flamrng fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ." I Thess. 1 :8. Too many people today are trying to be saved by a faith that does not work, a faith in which there is no obedience; a dead faith. Evidently, God expected such teachings to rise, according to the inspired James: "What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath ... faith, and hath not works? Can faith save him." James 2:14; "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone." 2:17; "Ye see then how that bv works a man is justified, and NOT BY FAITH ONLY." 2:24. Notice in Hebrews chapter 11 where a list of heroes of fa;th are recorded and that in every case faith brought the blessing ONLY when the individual resoopded in OBEDIENCE TO THE WILL OF GOD. Therefore, trust no longer in a dead faith. ALL creeds, manuals, disciplines, catechisms, articles of faiths, etc., written bv UNINSPIRED men have been written AFTER and SINCE the Bble was written and are WITHOUT divine -approval. We urge you to attend worship in true Churches of Christ that you might learn more of the true faith and OBEY the Gospel of Christ, then continue-.'.'. "steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and ' fellowship, and in breaking of .' bread, and in prayers." Acts 2:42. "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing (not playing) and making melody in your heart to the Ixrd. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." Eph. 5:19-21.
