New Livestock Disease Strikini Horses, Cattle
" INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Dec. 5. (Spl.) A "mystery" disease, striking horses and cattle when they are' turned into newlypicked corn fields, was the subject of a special warning issued to farmers by livestock health authorities here today. I "Don't turn horses or cattle into cornstalk fields without keeping them under close ob-. servation," says today's warning by the American Foundation for Animal Health. "Losses due to , 'cornstalk disease' have been Widespread in recent years, and are expected to start attain this month, with corn picking well under way." Exact cause of the disease is ' still a mystery, veterinary scientists say. It is believed to be due to either a virus, or to some unknown poison developed in the corn stalks or leaves, and the disease is said to strike less frequently where corn lias ' boen machine-picked than in fields where stalks have been left standing by hand picking. "Symptoms of cornstalk disease are quite similar jo those of horse sleeping sicknass," the Foundation's bulletin states.
