The 177,000,000 pounds of used fab salvaged by housewives in 1945 approximately ; equaled the oil yield of 1,160,000 acres planted to soya beans which would stretch in a ' mile wide path from Albuquerque, New Mexico to New York City. OR, they equaled ttw yield of 850,000 acres planted to peanuts which would flow in a mile wide river from Detroit to Albuquerque. For many months to come household salvage will continue to be as important a source of domestic supply of fats and oils as the acres farmers plant to soya beans and peanuts. The government is urging all housewives to take an active part in this industrial effort that returns to them the soap and other household necessities they so urgently need.

LABOR CALLS FOR DEFEAT OFLAND1S . , - . . ..... ... ( . . . . . , . i . WHEREAS ; The Bloomington Federation of Labor and the American Federation of Labor through its President, William Green, sent urgent telegrams to Congressman Gerald Landis demanding that he vote against the Case Bill, and ' WHEREAS; Landis ignored these demands and on May 29 and June 11, 1946, voted for the Case Bill, and WHEREAS; The Case Bill was a bill which was designed to wreck the organized labor movement in America. ' WHEREAS j Landis not only voted for this bill but himself added two of its worst sections. WHEREAS; Landis also voted for the anti-Labor Hobbs Bill (Nov. 12, 1945), a bill designed to wreck the AFL Teamsters Union and injure all organized labor; and " WHEREAS; These votes on the Case Bill and the Hobbs Bill were blows treacherously aimed at the very heart of organized labor in America and would have virtually ruined the Wagner Act and put back the cause of labor 20 years, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED; That .these votes completely wipe out any small favors which Landis in previous years might have done for labor, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; That the Bloomington Federation of Labor oppose Landis in the current Congressional campaign and work actively for his defeat hot for any partisan reasons, but solely on the grounds of the above-cited anti-labor activity, AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; That the president of the Bloomington Federation of Labor be instructed immediately to call a conference of representatives of all Central Labor unions in the
Seventh Congressional District to discuss plans for common action for insuring the defeat of Landis. ' 1

"THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST SALUTE YOU." t Romans 16:16
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His word, Just to rest upon, His promise, Just to know "Thus saith the Lord."
GOSPEL of CHRIST WILL GOODNESS ALONE SAVE YOU?
"There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centruion of the band called the Italian band, a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave alms to the people, and prayed to God always." (Acts 10: 1-2). Thus we are introduced to a man whose devotion to God and fear of Him overflowed into the lives of family, servants and soldiers around him. (See Acts 10:7) This man's regard for God moved him to love men, and this love was shown in his alms-giving. Yet he did not consider his benevolence as a passport to Heaven, for he prayed to God alway. Further, this man, though a Gentile, was "of good report among all the nation of the Jews." (Acts 10:22). If you are prone to count yourself good, consider this man. Notwithstanding his superlative moral qualities, an" angel of God directed him to send to Joppa for Simon Peter, saying, "He shall tell thee what thou ' oughtest to do." (verse 6) Peter later recounting the language of the angel to Cornelius, said, ". . . who (Peter) shall tell thee (Cornelius)' words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved." (Acts 11:14) Therefore, though Cornelius was a very good man indeed, there was something he ought to do in order to be saved. " Peter was sent for. In due course, he came. "And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, 'Stand up; I myself also am a man.'" (verses 25, 26). Strange isn't it that some religious folk worship men both living and dead, angels, graven images and so on, when an apostle of Jesus Christ (for whom they profess much regard) plainly showed that he would not condone such conduct?
Peter, having been shown in a vision ' that he should call no man common or unclean (verses 9-17, 28), entered into the Gentile's house, and put this question, "I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?" (verse 29) Cornelius, after a review of attending circumstances, said concerning himself his kinsmen and near friends whom he had called together, "Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God." (verse 33) Splendid attitude! Receptive audience! Can you hear the things commanded you of God, dear reader, or does a man-made creed shut your ears to the truth? Peter preached the gospel of Christ to his audience (verses 34-43 and I Cor. 15:1-4) Now, notice: "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all , them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision (Jews) which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God." (Concerning pouring out of the 'Spirit, on the Jews, see Acts 2:1-21) Then answered Peter, "Can any man forbid water, that these shonld not be baptized, which have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord." (Acts 10: 44-48) Thus the superlatively good man Cornelius, after he had received the Holy Spirit as representative of the Gentiles, was told what he "oughtest to do;" be baptized in water in the name of the Lord. "God is no respector of persons" (verse 34); what he required of Cornelius, He requires of you. "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." (Mark 16:16).
