j "... V."l remember these steps'" Cynthig told me, .... ' GALLI's men forced the rear door of the bishop's house," making a great deal of noise. I wondered if the sounds had been heard by the Christians in the depths of the 'crypt. We crowded into the house. Galli soon found the stairwsy to the cellar, and we descended in single file. "I remember these steps," Cynthia said. "I hope I will be able to recall the place of the secret door." . ' " ' But when we got down into the subterranean room, I noticed that the actress was confused. Galli observed, "Can't you remember?" ' ' '"'..''"' . His question angered her. "Did you expect me to go straight to the hidden door and open jt for you?" she snapped. "Set yenr men to work, topping and exploring." The vigiles beg'sn testing the stones. opening. He struck it with a hard steel bar, listening attentively. The sound seemed different to me or was it my imagination? I was alarmed but at last he got up and stood uncertainly with the others. "Pry up some stones," Cynthia commanded 1 :' The work was slow. The torches burned up the air and the place grew' foul. Cynthia and I finally retreated upstairs leaving the baffled and enraged Galli to keep his men at their task. ' '"'' ' . ;'' ' '' ' v In the birhop's library, Cynthia seated her-elf. "I want to be here when they are taken;" she "said. Not knowing that I ever had sesh 'lhe library before, she began some lengthy story of childhood experiences- Hinder '.'this roof and I Ml-asleep I was aroused by Cynthia screaming, "Roscius, Galli! The bishop, the bishop!" .. -. . '. . '

"The bishopl" Cynthia cried.

I sprang tip, somewhat confused and saw people in the room, Ignatius, Alee, his niece, and Joseph Athlai, a Christian lawyer. Galli ran in, snarling, "Where have you been? I have been looking for you." "In the wrong place as usual," Ignatius returned pleasantly. They argued sharply over Galli's right to break into the house. Galli wavered. ' "Send your men back to dig," Cynthia snapped. "Caesar will protect us." ' "Yes, Caesar will take care of us," the prefect said confidently as the actress and I left the house. We entered the litter and were borne toward the Palace. I pondered the words, "Caesar will take care of us." What Marcus called Caesarism had never been so clear to me . . . (Continued tomorrow).
