Shelburn The Panthers from the lower half of Curry Township are looking to a hardwood season full of . outstanding prospects. With six lettermen back from last year's Wabash 'Valley Tournament finalist squad, the Shelburn boys have been hard at work these opening weeks. Last year the Panthers won out in their sector .of the Wabash Valley prelims and stopped short of the championship title in the Indiana State Teachers College gym by an aggressive last-minute bid by the Linton Miners. The Shelburn five were nosed out in the finals of the Sullivan rounds of the 1945-46 State Tourney by the Golden Arrows of Sullivan, hanging up a season's record of three losses in twenty-five games. Lettermen Dick McHugh, Bill Matheny, Dick Sweet, Don West, Don Tincher and Ed Livingston probably will be supported on this season's varsity by Tom Santus, Jim McCracken, Bob Anderson and Leslie Skinner as prospective first string aspirants.

Farmersburg - The Plowboys from the north half of Curry Township are set for a basketball season with tournament championship as their ultimate goal. Last season the Farmersburg five sported a tall contingent and registered thirteen credits to five debits. With Jack Russell, a boy from the home town, in the coaching position, the Plowboys are expected to unearth new furrows in Sullivan county basketball circles. Jack made a name for himself as a member of the powerful Farmersburg quintet who opened the eyes of Wabash Valley fans in the 1939 rounds of valley championship competition. Virtually the entire 1945-46 Plowboy squad - were lost through graduation and Coach Russell plans to team members of the following to returning lettermen , Don Hogan, Emory Benson and Bill Drake: Bill Kelly, Bill Suter. Paul Walters, Pete Harding, Bill Eastham, Benny Watson and Jim Johnson.

GRAYSVILLE

SULLIVAN HIGH As usual the Golden Arrows will be delayed in entering the basketball season with neighboring Sullivan county fives, due to their participation in gridiron competition. Coach Gordon Keck states that spring practice brought out lettermen Joe Lyday, Bill McCrocklin, Johnnie Walters, Bob Soiithwood and Lee Russell. Jack Sevier, who also membered the Arrow squad last season, will carry the water bucket for his pals this year, his inactivity brought about by an optic disability. . ' Prospects Dean Brodie, Jim Sevier, Jerry McCammon and Bill Pinkston are in the favorable varsity class and a newcomer

With Sullivan-born and bred

Paul Terrell at the helm of the

Trojan legions this season, great things are expected of these men of the hardwood. Last season the plucky Fairbanks squad overcame height with aggressive power to eke out seven wins in their thir-

Kteen engagements.

minded county, with many a

basketball thriller last year

and with Coach Terrell in the guiding position the horizon

looks to be shedding new brilliance on Trojan hoop history.

Graysville Greyhounds At .the starting lineup of Sullivan county basketball quintets ready for the "go" sign are the Graysville Greyhounds with Trainer M. A. Sakel directing the pace. With lettermen Dale Cox Gene Easter, Joe Burton, Burl Harris and John Ransford back for the varsity, Coach Sakel pronounced the additional varsity prospects as "looking fair." Suffering a "mediocre" year last season, the Greyhounds, nevertheless, will be in there tossing the leather basketward to place themselves among the county's aggressive fives. i (

Merom Beavers

The Merom High School Beavers are prepared to sound off their 1946-47 victory building plan Friday against the Farmersburg Plowboys. Working hard to iron out minor kinks, the boys , from the "banks of the Wabash" have been stressing the offensive for certain "goal obtaining" purposes. The Beavers showed mightily in last year's State tourney here after a comparatively slow season. They pressed their opponents . hard all the way and folks down that 'a way, have high hopes for a revival of the Beaver squads of old.
