BROADWAY NIGHTS BY AXEL STORM
Distributed by In that tops musical hit, "Annie Get Your Gun," there's a lilty lyric that goes "There's no business like show business..." And in this, the rehearsal season, show business reaches the zenith of zany. A score of tiny, medium sized and giant productions are about to be born and all the parents, relatives and friends of the expected offspring go around running high temperatures; worrying, fretting, talking to themselves an to anyone who will listen. Awesome and bizarre become the cavernous interiors of darkened theatres where actors, directors, producers, advisers and "experts" gather to help bring the child into the world of makebelieve. Nothing could be less inspiring, however, than the Darren, gloomy stages where their voices now echo eerily. In some are to be seen the scattered fragments of last year's scenic finery; in others there is only a blank brick wall or a futuristic pattern of ladders and ropes, of fire proofed boarding and wooden planks; of saw horses and electrical quipment. A disinterested doorman peers in from time to time. The actors, clad in their street clothes rush in from breakfast or lunch and sit. about on uncomfortable chairs with scripts in their hands. Casually they read off their lines without emotion or gesture. Propped on a table, as like as not," is a director waiting a chance to get the players to "dig into" their lines. In one such crypt-like place a Helen Hayes may be moving about; in another, four gents with trombones and cornets hover over a piano; next door a row of cuties, minus make-up, prance about in their rehearsal trunks. From one end of Broad With The Colors TV 5 Thomas Burns, son of Mr. "and ilivs. Jack Burns. New Lebanon, lander! in Seattle Sept. 1st after snemlirig IS months' in the South Pacific area. Before crn: barking for the U. S. I't was a member of the Army of Occupation in Japan. He is expected to be home in the very near future.

way to another frantic producers begin sending out "calls." One is searching for a 14 year oh" boy who looks like a youthful genius but can act. Another wants a 12 year old boy who can memorize a staggering number of lines. Still another can see no hope for his play unless a certain lady in Hollywood jumps her film career to come to Broadway. The phones of theatrical agents ring constantly. Throngs pack the little offices of casting agents. Wistful looks are a Cime a dozen. Hope is in the wind and the starving actor of last year imagines himself the white hope of this year. Within a few weeks or months, the stages will be brilliantly lighted and the world of makebelieve will take the place of the darkened crypts of today. Millions will be spent only to oe dropped at a try-out in Philadelphia, Boston or Baltimore. At this moment reports come in, for instance, that all is not well with "Park Avenue," with which many of Broadway's mightiest names are connected and concerning which there has been excited whispering. Taken to the road for a workout, it was almost immediately withdrawn for revisions and even recastings. A few rush in while the others are getting ready. And one such is "Hidden Horizon," which is not likely to enjoy a vcry long life. Written by Agatha Christie and taken from her murder mystery thriller, "Death On the Nile,' it promised a pleasantly creepy evening. But Broadway's critical sleuths were unable to detect so much as a goose-pimple. Whatever may be Miss Christie's gift as a spinner of hair-raising yarns, as a playwright her dialogue must often be as embarrassing for the actor as it is dull going for the audiences.
