GOSPEU6f CHRIST MUSIC IN THE WORSHIP

, Here, from the New Testament, is the lend of music which we are required to offer up to God as praise in the worship : Matt. 26:30: "And when they had SUNG a hvmn, they went out into the mount of Olives." Acts 16:25: "About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and . SINGING hymns unto God. ..." Romans 15 :9 : "Therefore will I give praise unto thee among the Gentiles, and SING unto thy name." I Cor. 14:15: "I will SING with the spirit, and I will SING with the understanding also." 'Ephesians 5:19: "Speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual sonrs. SINGING and MAKING MELODY WITH YOUR HEART to the Lord." Colossians 3:16: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching' and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, SINGING with grace in your hearts unto God." Hebrews 2:12: "I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the congregation will I SING thy praise." Hebrews 13:15: "Through, him (Christ) then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the FRUIT OF LIPS which make confession to his name." Thus, we see God commands us to SING praise unto him. Not one passage has been produced which even indirectly mentions mechanical instruments of music in New Testament worship. Unable to so contend, those who have ADDED instrumental music have been forced to defend its use upon other grounds. One popular contention is: mechanical instruments of music were used under the law of Moses in Old Testament times. To undertake to live under both

the law of Moses and the law of Christ is spiritual adultery for we read : ". . . the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth. For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth ; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband. So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man. she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made DEAD TO THE LAW THROUGH THE BODY OF CHRIST; that ye should be JOINED TO ANOTHER, even to HIM WHO WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD, that we might bring forth fruit unto God," Romans 7:1-4. Furthermore, Gal. 5:4 declares: "Ye are severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace." Yet someone will say, "David used the harp, and he was a man after God's own heart." Have you not read in the Scriptures, Amos 6:1 and 5: "Woe to them . . . that invent to themselves instruments of music like David?" Another popular contention is: instrumental music is not expressly forbidden in the New Testament. This argument puts a premium on the silence of the Scriptures. It creates respect for what the Bible does not say, .rather than what it does say. Put it affirmatively and it looks like this : One has the right to practice anything that the Bible does not expressly forbid. But John declares in 2 John A: "Whatsoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God." Let us then, dear reader, be resolved not to go beyond what is written in our worship of God. Find the nearest church of Christ, and attend worship. A cordial welcome awaits you.
