TAX AID FOR GOP DONORS Representative Knutson, Republican, of Minnesota, who is ranking minority member of the House Ways and Means Committee, has made the statement that if the Republicans get control of Congress next fall, taxes will be reduced . 20. .Representative Knutson is one of those who wants to reduce the taxes of his party's backers, the Millionaires and Monopolists, to a minimum. "Ready?" I echoed. "Why in an hour."

THE curator of Rome's theaters summoned me. to his offices and broke the disturbing news. "Roscius, the - imperial cabinet wishes you to take Cynthia Mamuta to Antioch in Syria and direct her in derision performances against the cult of the Christians. Caesar Trajan believes ridicule will be more potent than fire and sword. When can you be ready?" ; .. ; "Ready?" I echoed sarcastically. "Why, in an hour. All I have to do is dash off a dozen scenes against the Christians and persuade a temperamental actress to go." The curator brushed this aside. Caesar's mind was made up, he said. And then, even more disturbing, he revealed that my best scene writer, Marcus RJacer, was in jail for treason. He had written a piece against Caesar's plans to war on the Parthians.

I trudged along, feeling a great sorrow for Marcus

There was nothing to do but aree to the task. I trudged down the Street of Theaters slowly, feeling the weight of my sixty years and of a great sorrow sorrow that my young friend, Marcus Macer, was tinker a cloud. . - "Search until you find Cynthia Mamuta," I teld my secretary; "Then bring her here." ' . ' '' While I. waited, I wondered how. .'It could work out. Commander Fascus, foremost among .Caesar's, tribunes, undoubtedly had been glad to see Marcus jailed. Fascus hated Marcus as much as the gorilla-like commander was fascinated by the coldly-beautiful Cynthia. He would do everything to assure the writer's punishment. I was still pondering when Cynthia entered. "What do you think of the arrest of Marcus?" I asked. - "I am not surprised," Cynthia said. "That's what comes

"You've got to help me," Cynthia said.

. of his stubbornness and cynical attitude." 1 She always spoke thus of the man to whose writings she owed her theatrical success. But I was not taken in. "Fascus' jealousy may mean Marcus' death," 1 said. I A startled look. widened her blue eyes.. "They won't hurt Mi' reus. Their real purpose is to frighten him. Fascus told me that. J agree with him that. Marcus needs the lesson. The commander will have him released any time that I ask, him to." .... Then I told her what I bad learned. "Marcus is to be j esilrd for life to the copper mines of Cyprus." The actress gave a gasp as if someone had dashed a flagon of cold water over her head, and, her cry told me ' much. "Oh, Uncle Roscius! You've got to help me .'..". (Continued tomorrow)
