BROADWAY NIGHTS

BY AXEL ?J;i)lKtrlboted by Kint: Producer Edwin Lester lias discovered that neatly packaged bundles containing music masters' and their better known works can be readily sold to the Broad way trade. Last year, taking a number of liberties with the lii'e and times of Edward Grieg, Mr. Lester brought out "The Song of Norway." And since it contaihed a number of easily recognizable Grieg compositions, . it mattered little that the book had turned Grieg into a light opera composer for the purposes of ihe plot. Now it's "Gypsy Larly." And what Omnihus books are to the collected works of popular authors "Gypsy Lady" is to Victor Herbert. For Mr. Lester or-W-ed "The Fortune Teller" and ''"he. Serenade" combined in a single operetta. Since it roumls up such Herbert favorites as "Slumber on, My Little Gypsy Sweetheart" and "Romany Life." on one hond, and "I Love You, I Adore You" on the other, "Gypsy Lady" could go on running for some time without a plot and he well attended by audiences ready to 1;ike their Victor Herbert via radio or platters or on the singe. If, in the course of the rewriting, "Musetta," the Gypsy lady of the Harry B. Smith original, remains the ".Musetta" of the Henry Myers revision, let us quickly advise you tiiat the Miss Helena Bliss, who sings "Musetta," is a newcomer with one of the best voices to he heard on Broadway and can act betlct than most good singers. Also the producer has snapped up the scenery, the cosl timing and in particular the chorus line. Add to this music that has been specially prepared for chorus purposes and you have a fairly good picture of the goings on at the Century Theatre. If we have ovei'looked the quite funny do ings of Melville Cooper it's because both he and his fallow comic, Jack Goode, do just about

STORM Features, Inc.? as wuch clowning as the book will let them. Yes there's that rewrite job again. And leave us face it: It the old Harry Smith effort is to be considered period stuff, then the 194G arrangement of Henry Myers appears to do little more than move an antique shop a few blocks down the street. ' ;.- And while speaking of operetta "books," there's the sad case of Richard Tauber and "Yors Is My Heart." Manhattan critics have been scratching their memories to recall if and when they had ever encountered a worse "book," This is too bnd. For Tauber has been a long time getting to Broadway. For years chatter has been drifting in from many sources toiling of this original swoon boy. He was, it would appear, the originator of that sudden crack-in-the-voice and that sudden choke-and-swallow school of singing associated with certain popular crooners. However, Tauber has a fine lyric tenor and is an internationally known artist. Some crilics felt that, it was a bit too bad that someone I hadn't tw.sed'the show away and tinned the evening over to a concert routine featuring Tauber. When first we heard about "Yours. Is My Heart," the year was about 1030 and the theme song was being murdered- by an endless number of wistful male troupers. At that time it was 'known as "The Land of Smiles" and Franz Leliar, the composer, was leaning comfortably back on the profits of "The Merry Widow." Since then we have heard of Tftuhrr starring in the piece in England, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Holland, Belgium 'and even South Africa. If in those years Tauber has grown a bit older and a bit chunky for romantic purposes his voice is something ete. And in spite of the "book" Tauber will be able to bring matinee gas around fof a few weeks at leasiCUR APPRECIATION
