JESUS AXD THE SAUBEUHJCBa OF HUMAN LIFE -" LESSON TEXT Exodus 20:13; Mat-., thew 5:21-24; 10:29-31; 18:10-14. , MEMORY SELECTION But I say i'unlo you. That whosoever is angry With

his brother without a cause snail oe m danger of the judgment. Matthew 5:22.

, Human life is sacred, and that is not primarily because of any law " of man, but because God created

, Since that is true, no man has any right to take the life of another . for any cause except at the direct command of God, Only by the orderly process of law for the pro

tection of society and in accordance with the Word of God may there be any such action by man toward

man. Both of these truths are declared In Scrirrtiire in Grid's covenant with

' Noah (Gen. 9:5, 6), which was made, , possibly a thousand years before the Ten Commandments were given to 'Moses. I. The Prohibition of Murder (Exod. 26:13).

ly, or he may ' be the duly ' con- ; stituted legal officer carrying out the Jaw of the land in taking the life of one who has forfeited his right - to live because he has slain another.

: There is also the right of self-de-' fense, be it individual or collectiva as in war: But these are the only

exceptions; let ; us not attempt to justify any other. Murder is more prevalent than mosfofus suppose. In 1944 there was a murder every fifty minutes in our land.'- ; J v - Do not forget the deaths, the destruction of life, by avoidable automobile ' accidents. Some cf these were ' really ' murder because the. one responsible drove with defective brakes, dangerous tires, or while he was intoxicated. Add to tnese the deaths in industry caused by failure to provide proper safeguards ,or healthy working conditions, -and by the exploitation of .hUd labor and we sav feat we

Snould cry aloud, Ttim Shalt do no murder." '

II. The Provocation to Murder (Matt 5:21, 22). . Murder finds its provoking cause in the heart of man. Our Lord was concerned about correcting the desires rather than to apprehend the : offender after the act had been . committed.-''. -Itv it - the better way, . and the more effective one. In this matter of murder, Jesus . cut right through the outward aspects of the matter and pointed out that an . angry hatred in the heart is the root of all murder.. If wa hate, we have murder in our hearts. Circumstances may hinder its fulfillment, but the danger is always there until we remove the cause. May God help those ' of us who have strong feelings that we may not yield them to the devil in such : anger against our brother! v.. i . III. The Prevention of Murder (Matt, 5:23, 24; 10:29-31; 18:10-14). ' Prevention with God means more than putting up a barrier to try to

Keep men irom Kiuing one anotner. He deals with the heart of man; and when that 13 right the whole life will be right. There must be 1. A Eight View of Self Mark 5:' 1t3, 24). We must learn by prayer aM humility of heart to suffer at ; the hands of others, to keep peace, td seek our brother's welfare, i Note that it is not even a question of how i we may feel against our brother. If he has aught against us . we are to do all we can to win him. i We who believe in Christ are to be" in deed as well as word the

jhildfen of our heavenly Father ' (Matt.5:45), loving not only those who are kind to us but also our ene- . niss.y j ' 1 A "Right ': View of God (Matt. .10:29-31). .He who knows when a yparrow falls to the ground is con

cerned' about the smallest detail of

y':r lives. , No man can lay hands rf violence on another man without having to reckon with God about hi, misdeeds.; Our God is not" afar off and' too ' eoncerned with eternal affairs to be interested in the sufferings of the individual.' He is here now; and we should count him into every relationship of life. '' A Pioht View nf Man flTott

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Soul" is the subject of ,the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, August 18. '' " - - ' The Golden Text is: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour" (Luke 1:46, 47). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love;

I even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his i love. These things have I spoken j unto you, that my joy might remain

m you, and that your joy might be full" (John 15:8-11). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "We cannot circumscribe happiness within the limits of personal sense. The senses confer no real enjoyment. The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never T)e won" (p. 61). "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love" (p. 57).

Our altitude towards the 'truth determines our .destiny. Religious faith is much more than a mere intellectual belief in the truthfulness of a statement; it is also action which harmonizes with that knowledge. Disbelief and disobedience , are synonymous. The clouds that cover the sunshine, They cannot banish the sunr And the earth shines out the brighter . When the weary rain is done. We must stand in the deepest shadow To see the clearest light; ' And often through wrong's own darkness " Comes the living strength of light.

We must live through the dreary winter If we would value the spring; And the woods must be cold and silent Before the robins sing. The flowers must be buried in darkness Before they can bud and bloom, And the sweetest, warmest sunshine Comes after the storm and the gloom

DOES HE LOOK UPON KOII?

When the grain of the fields is planted, springing forth in abundance of beauty and nourishing strength, the Lord God must certainly then smile upon His creation. He enriched the soil that nourished the seed, He caused the rain to fall, the sun to shine and the winds to blow and all the elements to perform perfectly in order that the harvest might be great. Is it then so hard to believe that Jesus who was God personified wept as He looked down upon Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, saying, "Jerusalem. Jerusalem, how oft I would have gathered you to my bosom as a hen gathcieth her chicks and ye would not.", j - . ' ' . 1 , . - , . . r; ' ' v .- ' .'. 1. '. ; ... ;,, t : -i a t. -.. . : ' '.. He wept and also for us for inasmuch as He said, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for, those who shall believe on me because of these," in His prayer. If the Lord God rejoiceth in the perfection of the growth of the fields, is lie not a hundredfold more concerned with the perfection of man? God smiles upon the good earth which is perfect because He made it living without sou!, but to man He gave a soul . . . a chance to determine fus own actions and therein lies the corruption. The smile of "good and faithful servant5' may not ba God's countenance for you this day but His compassionate, , Icving spirit tells of a "never too late" and an "ever seeking Savior." Corac and believe go and sin no more!
