Why Plug A Watermelon?
Friend, would you buy melons from a man who seemed offended by your request that he plug one? If he was offended ?.nd refused to have one plugged, wouldn't you be suspicious that he knew something was wrong with the melons? But friends, is it not strange that many good folk seem to be offended when it is suggested that they use the wisdom in things religious that they admit is necessary in material things? Very few people want their religious belief investigated. Why should we be offended if someone niakes a thorough investigation of the doctrines of the religious system of which we are members and into which we have committed ,our souls on the journey to eternity? One thing is certain. If a man holds to a doctrine or practice on which he fears to have the searchlight of God's word turned, that is evidence that he fears it will not stand the test. Truth fears nothing by investigation! If what I believe is the truth, it will stand up under investigation. If what I believe is not the truth, then it should be exposed whether I like it or not. In fact the man who points cut error, giving chapter and verse for doing so, is actually the best friend these in error could possibly . have, though they may not realize it! That there are many conflicting religious theories in the world today, is admitted by all. Yet very few of them are open to investigation. They ' want
you to accept their religious melon without allowing you to plug it! Not only does this tendency to ignore differences and investigate none of them indicate that most folk know their doctrines will not stand investigation, but is also in violation of the commandments of God! God orders us to investigate religious claims. Put thent to the test. Jesus warned of the many false teachers, but said, "Believe them not" Matt. 24:23, 24. In I John 4:1 we are warned to "Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of Gcd, for many false prophets are entered into Ihe world." I Thess. .":21 tells us t? "Prove all things; hold fast to thp.t which 's gedd." But we are not to prove or try them bv our opinions, but by the Word of God. "If any man speak let him speak as' the oracles of G(d" I Peter 4:11. The scriotuies furnish us all that is good (II Tim. 3:16. 17). Let us not add to nor subtract from them (Rev.- 22:18. 19). So, friend, do not blindly accept the traditions of men (Matt. 15:1-3), but search the scriptures daily to see if the things presented are so. That !s a mark of nobility (Acts 17:11). How noble are you? Take a pencil and e;o through the Bible marking every place you: find the church of which you are a member or the doctrines to which you subscribe or held. Then, having put them ta the test, turn loose of all things you cannot mark at least once in the Book of God! This is a challenge. Try it!
