State Traffic Accidents Claim 485 Lives In First 6 Months Of 19

INDIANAPOLIS Ind. Aug. 6 (Special) State traffic accidents claimed 485 lives and cost an estimated economic loss of $21,825,000 the first six months of the year, Col. Austin R. Killian, state police superintendent, announced today. The fatality toll is currently 31 per cent higher than a year ago, he said. Sullivan County's record showed three killed in crashes, witli a probable total economic loss to persons involved of $135,000. The latter figure is based on property damage costs, rnedical expense and loss of time from work. Greene County had six traffic deaths. Marion county, with 60 traffic deaths, was charged with the most serious traffic experience. Lake county followed with 42 victims. St. Joseph county reported 22; Allen, 19; Floyd, 15; Deleware and Vanderburgh, 14;

LaPorte and Vigo, 11; Madisori 12, and Johnson, 10. Forty-seven per cent of tin state's fatal' accidents were con centrated on highways adjacen to densely populated areas, Co: Killian said. Motorists were in volved in 32,600 crashes the firs half of the year, a jump of per cent over the 25,500 reportet in the initial period of 1945.
