FACTOGRAPHS The story of "Robinson Crusoe" was based on the actual adventures of Alexander Selkirk, friend of Daniel Defoe, who spent four years on an island off the coast of Chile. Commodore Perry introduced the idea of rail transportation into Japan when he at up a model line in 1852 on the beach of Yokohama. The Chinese are unexcelled in the modeling, and casting of bronzes, especially those of a decorative character. CAPITAL TRAFFIC CRASH KILLS 2; 5 ARE INJURED

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (UP) Two persons were killed and five others injured in a rush hour traffic accident this morning at one of the capital's busiest intersections. The accident was caused when a taxi cab, stopping to pick up a passenger, sideswiped another car, causing it to crash into a tree on the sidewalk. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (UP) Voluntary enlistments have

dropped off so sharply since July 1 that the Army will be compelled to call for 25,000 inductees when the compulsory draft is resumed Sept. 1, Army and Selective Service officials said. Although the Army hoped to obtain enough new men through the recruiting program, voluntary enlistments during July ran about 9,500 a week, or a drop of almost two-thirds below the fixed figure of 25,000 a week.

"Holiday", during which officials hoped to step up the enlistment program with a 50 per cent increase in pay for buck privates from $50 to $75 a month and other benefits, the program has fallen short.
