SYCAMORE TREES ARE SAFE, STATE EXPERT DECLARES INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., July 18 (Special) Admirers of Indiana's famous sycamore trees were assured today that the species is in no danger of becoming extinct. After receiving Innumerable telephone calls and letters, Frank W. Wallace, chief entomologist for the Indiana Department of Conservation, prepared a statement designed to set minds at rest among tree lovers who have been worried about the "scorched leaf" prevalent among sycamores and white oaks. "Sycamore trees," reported Wallace, "were injured severely this spring by frost just as the young leaves were unfolding, paving the way for a disease called Gnomia Veneta which attacks frosted twigs- and often

kills the branch 12 to 15 inches back. However, when hot weather arrives, the disease, dies out and the new growth is healthy, so from now on we can expect a great improvement in the appearance of the sycamores. The same ' situation prevails among our white fks. "By the way, this condition occurs about once every three years in Indiana. This season, I'm happy to say, very few tres were killed."
