"WHERE THERE IS SMOKE" Smoke-signals persist, over the state, indicative of a continuing and even increasing flame of indignation within a large segment of the Republican Party. Kindled by the pre-cenvention tactics of the Gates-Jenner-Springer machine, fuel was .added by the dictated slate of the boss-rid-: den convention. An indication of this general feeling of the anti-beer-;

and-patronage, anti-machine element of the Indiana G. O. P., was seen in Maripn County last week. Judge Stark, who made his successful campaign for prosecutor with the said on his return from Florida- that he was "demanding "backing of an independent Citizen's Republican committee, that -the Marion County organization be reformed to conform to the wishes of Republican votes as expressed in the primary." . - - The' Republican Citizen's, Committee went further. They announced that they would conduct a separate election campaign unless Marion County's "Boss" Henry Ostrom should resign; , . Ostrom himself came back with the statement that no one had askad;:;hirn to resign, and that he had no intention . of doing so.' ;t;j, l' V, ' ""rg'.T'-yffi'iv "" "-"J-" "'" " ""' nmm ""

"Wnat is it you want, Dan?" Daisy said. THE phone rang and rang while Lucile listened in. 5ut just as it seemed Dan would wait no longer, a woman's ! voice said, ''Hello?" The voice seemed old and defeated, and Lucile thought swiftly that she was making a fool of herself. This women was middle-aged and unimportant, somebody's faithful secretary, somebody's wife, not the (woman she ha'ed ... ' Apparently Dan didn't recognize the voice either. He .said "Is Ir3.,L.apham there? I want Mrs. Peter Lapham." i "Yes," said -.o voice. "What is it?" "Daisy!" sal ': Dan. And Lucile felt her heart leap enormously in her 3ist. "Listen to me for a minute," Dan said. "Don't hanR n; yjst listen to me. I" - He stopper ;., . 1 the two women could hear him breathing .aeavil'', D:. -l-ld leaning against the wall hardly caring

whether he went on or not. What difference could it make to her, after all?, "Daisy," he said. "Are you still there?" "Yes," she said. "I'm here. What is it you want, Dan? 'What is it now?" "Nothing. Nothing. Except to tell to ask 3'ou I didn't mean it. That's no way for things to end. I didn't mean that. I sweai- it." "Things ended a long time ago. I told you last summer." Haltingly, fumblingly, then, for a man usually so sure of himself, Dan tried to make his explanations and apologies. Daisy was near hysteria. She said in a light, rapid voice, "I I thought you wished me well.. Must I tell people, 'Oh, Dan O'Mara, he's one of my best friends. Of 'course he betrayed everything I'd thought about him for years in

one afternoon.' Is that what you mean? Shall I sit down and write that to Pete, to get before he's shipped off to war?" "Oh, no," said Lucile. She had meant to speak quietly but it came out almost a scream. "Oh, no, Mrs. Lapham or should I say Daisy? Don't you bother to write your husband. I'll write him for you. I suppose he knows who I am, doesn't he? I'll be glad to let him know you and Dan still manage to see each other. It'll be a pleasure to " At this point Dan realized he souldn't stop her by shouting over the phone and jumped up. The chair fell over behind him, the door crashed open against the wall, and Lucile, hearing him coming, dropped the phone and looked around wildly for a hiding place. There was none. I wish I could faint, she thought, and then Dan was in the room . . . (Continued tomorrow -
