THIS CHART graphically illustrates the trend of public and private debt over the last thirty years. Today the Federal debt is almost twice as large as all other debts combined corporations, mortgages, and state and local governments. At the end of 1945, the gross Federal debt was eati- . mated at $278.7 billions, according to daily U. S. Treasury statement, which means that the Government owed $2 out of every $3 of the nation's debt. Starting in 1919, when the Government owed 22 of every debt dollar, the picture slowly changed as Federal reductions were made by nearly two-fifths. A new low was reached in 1930 when the debt was brought down to 10 of every debt dollar. Daficit spending in the '30s and the cost of the war brought on the present government hieh of 66 of every dollar owed. (International) .
