Eastern Illinois Railroad Company was incorporated in Indiana, and its principal office in the state was listed as Sullivan. The fortunes of Sullivan and the C. -& E. I. and its predecessors have been allied since 1853, when the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad was completed except for a ten mile gap across the Busseron Creek bottoms, between Sullivan and Carlisle, ten miles to the south. For a year stage coaches carried the traffic between the rail heads. Then in 1854 the gap was closed, and the North and !?outh were connected by rail through the "Evansville Gateway," The first "Atlantics" that pulled the first trains and puffed their commerce in and out of Sullivan were the predecessors of the K-3's and Electro-Motive diesels that haul the now famous "Dixies".

"The first "through train" cleared Sullivan on Saturday, November 25, 1854, about ten years after it became a town. But the Evansville and Crawfordsville refused to carry mail at the prices of the stage line, and mail continued to come into Sullivan via stage from Merom, the former county seat, ten miles west on the Wabash River, - through which the Terre Haute and.Vincennes route stages jolted and sloshed their way. ' Sullivan is in most ways like any other Hoosier county seat city of between five and six thousand people. The city is centered around a court house square, in which stands a handsome Limestone court house. Here is the County's marketing center, and within a radius of a block from the court house typically lie most of the retail business houses and its two hotels. Within the next two blocks are several large and active churches and three of the city's four elementary schools.

The ;:mo'dern and very well equipped High School and a Trade School are located at the North approach to the city. The schools, the churches, the -Public Library, and the other institutions which give evidence of the solidity typical midwestem county seat towns are all found in vigorous health in Sullivan. Two of the fraternal orders maintain large lodge houses with spacious grounds, and the American Legion has just acquired and remodeled an estate with a large house at the north edge of the city. The economy of the community is based chiefly upon balanced, typically midwestern agriculture and upon coal mining. The dairy business, developed in this vicinity in the -last fifteen years, began to prosper upon the location in Sullivan of a cheese factory of the Kraft Food Products Company. This factory is now being expanded into one of the major cheese producing plants of that company, largely as a result of the now tested suitability of the surrounding countryside to cattle husbandry. The- richest treasures of Sullivan's surrounding county, however, are beneath its good soil. The chief of these is the bituminous coal which lies minable under most of the Sullivan county. Coal mining has not only been the chief industry, but for year; dominated the economy and utilized available labor to the extent that other enterprises had little chance to take root, despite an unusual combination of natural advantages as a location for many kinds of industry. ' Not only is Sullivan fortunately located with, relation to both markets and outside sources of supply, but, besides coal, it has accessible .in its immediate vicinity oil, natural gas, shale, fire clay, high grade gravel, water limestone as well as abundant cheap electric power supply. Its transportation facilities, are -excellent. The community is served not only by the C. & E. I. but also by the Indiana Division of the Illinois Central which extends between Indianapolis and Effingham, Illinois. The principal highways are U. S. 41 and

state highways 54 and 154, eastwest connections. j The public utilities, . except for the electric service, are locally owned and most 'efficiently operated by local management. The Sullivan Water Company pumps it, wat?r from a large gravel bed west of Sullivan and has at present a system with n 1,500,000 gallons per day reserve capacity which can be., increased many times simply by increasing the pumping facilities. The Dome Gas Company draV its gas from wells in the local field which appears to contain adequate .reserves for the future. The Kentucky natural gas line, .which . runs within six miles of Sullivan, can supply any possible industrial demand in almost unlimited quantities. The Sullivan Telsphone Company has . long maintained its service at metropolitan standards. Its president, Mr. John Hprbaugh, was reelected to succeed himself as president of the Telephone As:cciation of Indiana this spring. To make certain that some industrial activity establishes ' itself at Sullivan .during the present decentralization of industry, the community of Sullivan has or(T?nized itself into tbp Sull'vpn County Community Council, in Royal Invitation

which all groups in the community are represented, and through which labor and business are operating together to locate industry which will most fully utilize the combination of resources, facilities and location found there. This organization is pointing to the many excellent factory sites along the C..& E. I. right of way in Sullivan as major attractions for" business, and is stressing the connection afforded by the C. & E. I. It considers

that the C. & "E. I. will play an even larger part in the future of the city than it has in the past. A Sullivan man, Mr. Will H. Hays, has been a member of the Board of Directors of. the C. & E. I. for more than twenty years. The law firm of Hays Hays has been Indiana Counsel for the railroad for many years. Its founder, the late Mr. John T. Hays, was first employed by the old Evansville & Terre Haute in the eighteen eighties.
